Talk by Leigh Fondakowski on her work “SPILL”

CFA Staffer Andrew Chatfield writes in:

Playwright Leigh Fondakowski will discuss the development of her newest work, “SPILL,” a multimedia play about the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. She will discuss how she researched the work through interviews with Louisiana community members affected by the disaster and how she transformed that information into a theatrical work. She will also discuss her collaboration with visual artist Reeva Wortel.

Leigh Fondakowski was the Head Writer of “The Laramie Project” and has been a member of Tectonic Theatre Project since 1995. She is an Emmy nominated co-screenwriter for the adaptation of “The Laramie Project” for HBO, and a co-writer of “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later.” In 2011, she was commissioned by the Center for the Arts’ Feet to the Fire Initiative to create the work “SPILL,” which tells the stories of people and communities devastated by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. She was inspired to write the work following the THEAT/ENV course she co-taught with Wesleyan’s Director of the College of the Environment Barry Chernoff. The first staged reading of “SPILL” was done in Fayerweather Beckham Hall at Wesleyan in February 2012. “SPILL” had its world premiere in March 2014 at the Reilly Theater at Louisiana State University, performed by Baton Rouge’s Swine Palace. In this talk, Ms. Fondakowski will discuss how the play developed from the first interviews she did in Louisiana with Wesleyan students, to the premiere this past spring. An Outside the Box Theater Series event presented by the Theater Department and the Center for the Arts.

Time: 7 PM
Place: WestCo Cafe

Film Series: Suspiria

1977. Italy. Dir: Dario Argento. With Jessica Harper, Daria Niccoldi. 92 min.

An American newcomer’s arrival at a famed dance academy coincides with the grisly murder of a student fleeing the school in terror – a harbinger of more deadly things to come. Maggot showers, barbed wire, and occultism lurk around every corner in this sadistic, candy-col- ored stomach-turner that’s as terrifying as it is aesthetically striking.

We Speak We Stand: Campus-Wide Bystander Intervention Training!

From Willa Beckman ’15:

Become an active bystander by registering for Wesleyan’s bystander intervention training! Empowered bystanders make the campus community safer by standing up and speaking out when they witness situations that could potentially harm the health and safety of others. Intervening with peers can be difficult for a number of reasons and training will provide you with the skills to move from inaction to action and intervene safely and effectively.

The training features two distinct and separate tracks: sexual violence prevention and alcohol use intervention.

The next training is Monday, November 3rd, 7-10PM in 41 Wyllys room 112. Dinner included!

Register here by Friday, October 31st at 12:00pm.

Deadline: Friday, October 31st, 2014
Event Date: Monday, November 3rd, 2014
Time: 7-10PM
Place: 41 Wyllys room 112

The Double Twins Release Their New EP with The Healers Tomorrow At Earth House

healers:dt poster

The Double Twins (Matan Koplin-Green ‘15, Anna Schwab ‘16, and Dan Pope ‘16) describe themselves as “French-house inspired post-pop normcore chillwave,” and their first five-song EP was released on Soundcloud on September 8. To celebrate its début, they play Earth House tomorrow night with Milwaukee, WI, band The Healers.

The EP was written, recorded, and produced over the summer on the floor of Koplin-Green’s great-aunt’s apartment in New York. As he said on his Facebook page, “[The EP is] an emotional rollercoaster of uplifting pop, French house, deep electro, folk, and punk. It represents a culmination of my experiences over the last four years. It’s five songs I’ve written since I released the last song I said I would ever write.”

So, what happens when the newest musical project of the force behind “Do The Michael Roth” and a band of three doctors from Wisconsin meet? Read on for more about how this EP came to be, about The Healers, and about their show tomorrow night.

Long Lang Hoop House Extravaganza!

llLast spring Eva “Bubbe” Steinberg ’17 made me a mixed CD composed of only farm-related songs. Now she’s asking you to come help Long Lane Farm move their hoop houses this Saturday 11/1. Just remember that rain makes corn and corn makes whiskey! There will be snacks, but probably not of the whiskey variety. Here are the actual facts:

This Saturday, join your favorite local student-farmers as we take on the hoop houses!! These massive structures keep our veggies nice and cozy, but they aren’t in the right place! Help us with this task, and feel as warm and happy and good as our wee lil greens will in their new homes! Snacks will be provided!

Date: Saturday 11/1
Place: Long Lane Farm (near the rugby fields)
Time: 10 am – 2 pm
