How to see 300 million images? Exploring Large Cultural Data to Unlearn What We Know

An very urgent message from Jamie “best man on Facebook” Hall ’15

This Friday at 3PM in Russell House Lev Manovich, one of the shrewdest commentators and analysts of the digital age and an innovative designer of software, will present a talk entitled, “How to see 300 million images? Exploring Large Cultural Data to Unlearn What We Know.”

Manovich has pioneered the field of cultural analytics and the visualisation of large sets of data. His work has thought hard about the ways to design software and thereby configure and understand the humanities through computational and novel digital methods. His training and work in computer science—his current department psychology, art, digital cinema, and media history have been innovative, admirably free of the typical preconceptions, and consistently intriguing.

It’s sure to be dope

Film Series: Alumni Filmmakers Screening and Q&A

The Brothers ByrneConor ‘11 and Tyler ‘09 – have been using their post-Wes years to create a series of distinctive short films and music videos. We’ll screen their short Four Eyes and other works, then provide an opportunity for current and prospective majors (or other future filmmakers) to pick the brains of two recent alumni off to a great start.

Portrait Project

From Ryan Heffernan ’16:

Sign up to participate in THE PORTRAIT PROJECT! Sponsored by Art

Artists who participate in THE PORTRAIT PROJECT will be assigned the
name of someone else who also signed up to be an artist. This person
will be your subject and they will also be the artist of a portrait of
another subject. Prior knowledge of or experience interacting with
your subject is not required, and is in fact discouraged. It’s more
fun this way!

The rules: Make a 1×1 foot portrait of your subject in any medium you
chose (painting, drawing, photo, poetry, prose, printmaking,
sculpture, etc.).

The project will culminate in a curated exhibition of our portraits
that will take place in the Usdan display case around Thanksgiving
through the end of the semester. And hopefully a published chapbook of
all the pieces!

There is no requirement for who can sign up, just a commitment that
you will complete your part of the project.
