Hispanic Film Series: MOSQUITA Y MARI

mosquita y mari posterThe Hispanic Film Series brings this special treat:

Aurora Guerrero / 2011 / USA

Set in a predominately Mexican, immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles, this is the coming of age story of Mosquita and Mari, two 15 year-old Chicanas growing up in immigrant households. Yolanda, an only child, delivers straight A’s and the hope of the American Dream while Mari, the eldest, shares economic responsibilities with her undocumented family who scrambles to make ends meet. As their friendship grows, a yearning to explore their strange yet beautiful connection surfaces. Soon, their relationship proves more complex and sensual than anticipated. Mounting pressures at home and school collide with their newfound connection, forcing them to choose between their obligations to others and staying true to themselves.

Date: Thursday, October 1
Time: 8-10 PM
Place: Goldsmith Family Cinema

Film Series: Brazil

1985. UK. Dir: Terry Gilliam. With Jonathan Pryce. 132 min. 35mm print.

A sheepish government peon with grand romantic dreams attempts to correct a simple paperwork error only to find himself hurled into a treacherous world of terrorism, torture, and plastic surgery. Elaborate production design, hysterical performances and manically kinetic direction mark a fantastical satire of bureaucracy gone wrong.

Tonight / 8 p.m. / Goldsmith Family Cinema / $5
