Fundraising Week at the Star and Crescent

In the wake of the election, we at the S&C want to extend an invitation to anyone feeling scared, frustrated, or outright angry.  We have always endeavored to try and make the restaurant a safe, comfortable space that promotes dialogue and discussion over some tasty food.  But, it is more important now than ever to make a concerted effort to support the marginalized communities most affected by recent events.  Therefore, this week, we will be collecting donations for a different charity at every meal (of course, any and all contributions to these fundraisers are optional and left to your discretion). If you cannot make it to one of the week’s fundraisers, but would still like to contribute, we will post links to the sites where you can donate to the organizations directly.  We hope you will join us in breaking bread and spreading awareness about a few wonderful causes.

Descriptions of the organizations and their websites are listed at the bottom.

Planned Parenthood: “Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.”

LET’S BE CLEAR: “Let’s Be Clear is an apparel & education start-up that is normalizing sexual consent. Built upon the principle of creating change through shared social responsibility, we’re working to end sexual violence. Join the conversation. Help us build a culture where dialogue creates safer and healthier sexual experiences for all – and look good while doing it.”

CARA: “The detention of children and their mothers is not only inhumane, but incompatible with a fair legal process. The project builds on the volunteer’s collective experiences providing legal services, running a pro bono project for families detained in Artesia and Karnes, training lawyers and BIA accredited representatives, and leading advocacy and litigation efforts to challenge unlawful asylum, detention, and deportation policies.”

True Colors Fund: “Through a broad continuum of community organizing, public engagement, public policy, research, and youth collaboration programs, the True Colors Fund is working to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth by creating systemic change.”

Standing Rock: “Stand with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline from ripping through their ancestral homelands. It threatens their water, their sacred places, and the future of their children.”

Wesleyan Refugee Project: “WRP is excited to announce the first in a series of efforts to help refugees and displaced students access higher education.  WRP is working to crowdfund enough support for one Syrian refugee student to attend college in Jordan for four years.”

ACLU: “For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation’s guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.  Whether it’s achieving full equality for LGBT people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.”
