Half the Sky Meeting/Discussion about Women’s Empowerment

Marissa Guerrero ’15 wants you to turn oppression into opportunity for women worldwide:

Half the Sky is a worldwide movement that deals with international women’s issues – including gender violence, sex trafficking, education, economic independence, forced prostitution, and women’s empowerment – to empower women and combat the oppression that women and girls face worldwide. The movement works with a ton of smaller organizations (including Wesleyan’s very own SHOFCO) to support women worldwide.

This week’s meeting has two goals:
1. Organization – planning our exciting events and activities for the semester! Bring all of your great ideas!
2. Discussion about women’s issues! This week’s theme: empowerment through economic independence. We’ll discuss microfinance: its economic benefits, how microloans help to empower women and alleviate poverty, and its criticisms. Check out the websites below for more info!

Last Call to Apply for Wesleyan Writing Programs Fellowships

Another message — just in time! — from current/outgoing Ford Fellow Emma Mohney ’12:

If you are:

1. unsure of where you’ll be next year,
2. looking for work with significant responsibilities and learning opportunities,
3. hoping to get into graduate school in the future (or considering it), and
4. interested in contributing to the success of writing programs at Wesleyan,

then consider applying for Wesleyan’s prestigious post-graduate Writing Programs fellowships!

The application deadline for the two Writing Programs fellowships is right around the corner: Wednesday, March 27, at 4:30 pm. You can find specific information on the application process–it’s quite simple!–at the Ford Fellowship and the Shapiro/Russell sites. (N.B. for those interested in the Shapiro Center/Russell House Arts Fellowship: As the Arts Fellow position is being redefined, just apply to the Ford Fellowship and be sure to indicate your interest in the Arts Fellowship.)

n+1 Editors Plan Trip to Wesleyan, Book Night at “Wesley Inn & Suites”

From Samantha Maldonado ’13 comes news of an excellent event happening in Allbritton tomorrow for anyone interested in writing, magazines, or cultural criticism:

n+1 is a Brooklyn-based magazine of politics, literature, and cultural criticism. Editors Carla Blumenkranz, Dayna Tortorici, and Elizabeth Gumport will read a piece they wrote from the newest issue, discuss different genres of writing, talk about the publishing industry, and answer your questions.

Once you’ve properly digested that event blurb, head over to Pyxis to read Maldonado’s interview with the editors. Then consider offering said editors your couch for a night; it seems they’re not pleased with the hotel reservations their interns have booked at the Wesley Inn & Suites on Washington Street:

Espwesso Appwications Due Thuwsday

Job: Training/Barback Position at Espwesso

Wage: $8.50/hour

Shifts: One to Two 2 hr shifts per week this semester, One to two five hour shifts per week next year

Apply to join Second Stage Staff

You know those guys who put up a new, student-produced, student-run show pretty much every single weekend of the year? Jenna Robins ’13 wants to bring you into that world of acclaim and admiration:

Have you ever wanted to be a part of the oldest student theater group in the country? Produce a whole lot of really great theater? Be young, friendly, and attractive? Have keys to the ’92?

Now’s your chance! Starting today, Second Stage is accepting applications to join our staff! Duties include meetings every Monday, setting up risers most Wednesdays, representing Second Stage at shows on weekends, and striking shows most Saturday nights.
