Latinx Affirmation Month Convocation 2017

From Marcelo Salas ’19:

Every year, Ajúa Campos, Wesleyan’s Latinx student collective, holds Latino/a/x Affirmation Month (LAM) in November to celebrate and draw attention to Latinidad as it exists on and off campus. This year, we are celebrating and recognizing Afro-Latinidad and all the experiences it encompasses. With this in mind, we would like to everyone to LAM Convocation 2017, which takes place this Sunday, October 29th at 6 p.m. in the Alpha Delt Greene Room. Convocation serves to commence Latinx Affirmation Month. The event will feature a catered dinner, student speakers, and a keynote address from Francisco-Luis White. Francisco, who identifies as gender non-binary (pronouns: they/them), is an Afro-Latinx poet, storyteller and advocate. I have included their bio below:

“Francisco-Luis White is an Afro-Latinx poet, storyteller, and advocate residing in the District of Columbia. White has presented at OutWrite (2016, 2017), Fire & Ink: Witness – a Conference for LGBTQ Writers of African Descent, the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth (2014, 2015), the United State Conference on AIDS (2014), the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference (2017), and was a keynote speaker at the 2017 Northeast Queer and Trans People of Color Conference held at Princeton. In 2013, they were endorsed by Jill Stein and the Massachusetts Green Party as a candidate for Boston City Council.

The poet has been featured at Pete’s Big Salmon Poetry Series (Brooklyn), Busboys & Poets (Wasington, D.C.), the You Can’t Kill a Poet Reading Series (Philadelphia), among other events and venues. They have a collection of poetry forthcoming from Brooklyn-based indie publisher Indolent Books, as well as work published or forthcoming with Beltway Poetry Quarterly, Vetch Journal, and Lambda Literary Review. They’ve also been featured in conversation with other gender non-conforming writers for Winter Tangerine. A fierce HIV and LGBT equity advocate, White contributes to TheBody.com and HIV Equal.”

We hope that everyone will join us for LAM Convocation 2017!
