“Seeds of Time” Film Screening

Screen Shot 2015-04-27 at 3.03.24 PM

From Kate Weiner ’15:

A perfect storm is brewing as agriculture pioneer Cary Fowler races against time to protect the future of our food. Seed banks around the world are crumbling, crop failures are producing starvation and rioting, and the accelerating effects of climate change are affecting farmers globally. Communities of indigenous Peruvian farmers are already suffering those effects, as they try desperately to save over 1,500 varieties of native potato in their fields. But with little time to waste, both Fowler and the farmers embark on passionate and personal journeys that may save the one resource we cannot live without: our seeds.

Come join us for a FREE screening (with FREE FOOD) of the critically acclaimed documentary “Seeds of Time.” The screening will be at 8 p.m. in the CFA Hall.

Date: TODAY, Monday, April 27th
Time: 8PM

Interactive Field Guide: A “Visualizing the Environment” Exhibition

Interactive Field Guide Poster

From Kate Weiner ’15:

Inspired by the practices of some of the creative environmental artists that I met with during my “Visualizing the Environment” grant, my final exhibit will be a short and sweet interactive field guide to Wesleyan’s campus. We will start at 2 p.m. in the CFA courtyard with a mindfulness exercise guided by Katie McLaughlin before gravitating to the North College Lawn for a movement experience led by Jacob Musinsky and Chloe Jones. Afterwards, we will make our way to Earth House for a free meal to check out the environmental art show. This field guide will use a collaborative approach to cultivating experiences within Wesleyan’s shared spaces. Hope you can come and enjoy!

Date: Saturday, April 25th
Time: 2pm
Place: CFA Courtyard

Theater Department Presents: The Bald Soprano

In one of the seminal plays of Theater of the Absurd, “The Bald Soprano” (1950), Eugene Ionesco reveals the decay of a modern person and the futility of meaningful communication in contemporary society. Inspired by the cliche dialogues between the imaginary Mr. and Mrs. Smith in an English phrasebook for beginners, Mr. Ionesco rejected the coherent plot, character development, and concept of realistic drama, instead creating his own anarchic and grotesque form of comedy to convey the tragedy of language in a universe ruled by chance. In Jean-Paul Sartre’s words, “Ionesco sees our language as if from a distance. He reveals its banality and routine. The reader faces an acute realization of the absurdity of language, to the point when one does not want to speak anymore. His theater is a dream about language.” Directed by Professor of Theater Yuri Kordonsky.

Date & Time: Wednesday, April 22 through Friday, April 24, 2015 at 8pm;
Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 2pm and 8pm
Place: CFA Theater
Cost: $4 for Wesleyan students

The 48 Hour Magazine Project Has Begun

Amy Mattox ’17 sends this message through the digital airwaves:

The theme of this year’s 48 hour magazine is FORTUNE. We’re thinking blind luck, superstition, the stock market, gambling, risks, classism, fortune cookies, horoscopes, chris brown, chance, O Fortuna, tarot, the oracle at delphi, lucky charms, coincidence, misfortune, etc.
From now until MIDNIGHT, please send any responses to FORTUNE to 48hourmag@gmail.com with your full name and class year.
We want to see your .poems, drawings, paintings, collages, personal essays, photo essays, found object, wild assemblages, deconstructive critiques, sculptures, science experiments, fiction, album reviews, comix, knock knock jokes, haiku, soundbites, genre-defiant mud, exposé reporting, video art, interviews, animation, songs, podcast materials, etc – make it fast, make it quick, make it in 12 hours or four minutes.
We’ll be tabling in Usdan from noon till 8, asking the serious and incisive questions about FORTUNE you’ve all been waiting for.
Some final words of wisdom:
Fortune is a horse with four white feet
& more importantly:: The cleanly are comfortable, the dirty are lucky.
god speed + good luck

Reflections on the Recent Hospitalizations, Arrests and Wesleyan

This post is the first in a small series of reflections on the recent events on campus, to be published over the next few days. If you have anything that you would like to contribute, please feel free to reach out to us.

I am writing this in response to the traumatic and overwhelming events that have happened over the past few days – the hospitalization of a dozen students and the arrest of four others, as well as the media and institutional reactions. I hope that this can be a space of positive dialogue and solidarity, where we share our thoughts and reflections with compassion and humanity. I hope to counter the intense and destructive negativity and inappropriateness of some of the language being used to address these events in our own community, in person and online, in the media portrayals and in the administration’s emails. These events remind of us of the importance of fostering a supportive community, one that we must build on our own, as the student body.  These thoughts hope to help support that process of reconciliation, healing, and empowerment.

Wes Students & Alums #TakeThePledge in Clickhole Video

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 5.08.42 PM

Have you seen the latest viral video that’s sweeping the world? It’s even better than that one of the girl who is afraid of pickles, and certainly does more good for humanity.

I’m talking about the latest Clickhole video, called “Take the Pledge”. And it just so happens to feature a bunch of Wesleyan students and alumni, including Neo Sora ’14 as a pledge-taker from Japan named Taku.

This strong Wes presence is thanks to Will Feinstein ’13 who works for Clickhole and reached out to friends from Wesleyan, like Eric Lopez ’15 to help put the video together. Try to spot all the Wes folks, starting about 1 minute in.

And of course, remember to #TakeThePledge.
