“Who is Robert Don ’15?” would be a question asked by somebody who hasn’t been at Wesleyan for more than a minute. Depending on which show you’ve showed up to, he’s either the frontman of solo project vehicle Robert’s Don or the St. Louis-based Since 1902. If you’re confused about the difference between Robert Don singular and Robert’s Don possessive, you’re not alone— even Don acknowledges it’s “an awful band name, trust me, we know.”

But ignore all of that. Don’s latest EP, Liriope, is the reason why you shouldn’t throw up your hands in exasperation. In fact, the four songs and ~20 minutes of music here are the perfect beginning to summer, reminding you that, even after school ends, you will never escape the Wesleyan music scene. Half-recorded in Don’s now-famous room in the Butts, and half-recorded at his home in St. Louis (with production by Since 1902′s Justin Enoch), Liriope expands on some of the excellent anti-folk he experimented with on his debut Honestly Honesty and adds a little blues-rock into the mix.

“The General” runs on a laid back riff, with Don singing in his gravely baritone: “Like a general, sending off his troops to never return / That’s what I am, a creature of guilt.” Following the verse, Don plays off that guitar riff, and hits sweet harmonics before devolving into a very Fleet Foxes-like exposition. The tune is the most straightforward on the EP – dare I say radio ready? – because once it’s over, Liriope devolves into something else entirely with “Backwater Yeast Infection 2″ (Do we know where the first backwater yeast infection was? No we do not. It’s an unresolved mystery).

“BYI2″ begins as a jumble of guitars, although an enjoyable one at that, before melting into an Animal Collective-esque gloop— although you can always hear the melody through the mess. It’s a multi-part song, and by the end its violin plucks and bell rings sound like a zen resolution. Things pick up again for “Crooked Bow / Ocean Floor,” which benefits immensely from the gorgeous violin of Siri Carr ’15 and some well-placed drums coordinating with a very rhythmic guitar.

Closing out Liriope is the 8-minute-long “Appalachia Mountain Love Song,” which sounds just as gorgeous as it’s titled. Acoustic guitars and a lot of harmonics make this one of the sweeter songs I’ve heard this side of Mel Hsu and Jess Best— and you can be sure that’s one of the best compliments this writer has ever given out. And the parallel to Fleet Foxes continues here as well, as “Appalachia” spreads out, fully realized as maybe even more than a single song. Talk about music to relax in the sun to.

Liriope, if you’re curious like me but too lazy to look it up, is “a genus of low, grass-like, flowering plants from East Asia,” more commonly known in the US as “monkey grass” or “spider grass.” I hope that didn’t ruin the mystique for you.

If this music (or the music of any of Don’s other projects) pulls your heartstrings, and you happen to live around Missouri, Don might be coming your way. Feel free to blame him for continuing to confuse his two bands, but you should be happy to just get Robert Don in any form you can:

This semester, I’ve gotten to play with two great musicians in Robert’s Don (an awful band name, trust me, we know) — Dylan Awalt-Conley ’15 on drums and Matan Koplin-Green ’15 on bass/vocals. We’ve had an awesome semester together — played a bunch of very fun shows. Possibly (but don’t hold me to it) we may be able to get a tour together at the end of this summer in the Northeast, potentially as Since 1902 with some members from St. Louis.

Liriope is available to download for whatever price you wish to pay on Bandcamp, along with Honestly Honesty and the entire discography of Since 1902. If there ever was a time to go full-on obsessive into the world of Robert Don, this is it.

Continuing the trend of my former roommates’ undertaking cool extra-curricular projects, Maxwell Bevilacqua ’12 has plans to publish First Times, a collection of short pieces on firsts (not just of the sexual variety — though sharing those stories is strongly encouraged). Good news if you missed the deadline the last time we featured this project: he’s still seeking submissions. Want more details? Here’s a brief gchat interview I held with Max last week.

Wesleying: So, Max, what’s this I’ve been hearing about something called First Times? Does it have anything to do with Wescam?

Maxwell Bevilacqua: Wescam might have something to do with first times but First Times, a collection of short stories I’m putting together, probably has nothing to do with Wescam

(I can still be found as a graduate student btw)

W: A collection of short stories you’re putting together, huh? Sounds like Stethoscope Press. Is that true? I should add that I’m not exactly sure what Stethoscope is.

MB: This is not a stethoscope press publication (though the wonderful Piers Gelly ‘13 gave me some great advice) but it is an independent, supa creative, trendy thing I’m doing just like Stethoscope Press

and hey – you should see a doctor for that!!

W: Groan. Where did you get this kooky idea?

MB: I was sitting around with a couple of friends and we were sharing our “first time” (in the classical sense) stories

1. they were hilarious and 2. I had no idea about some of the most amazing stories from people I knew very well

and i think that these stories are hidden in our memories and sometimes kept out of normal conversations

so I am simply trying to unearth them

W: But, Max, surely you don’t envision a collection of purely sex stories! I’ll wait for Unlocked, thank you very much!

MB: I am so glad you mentioned this misunderstanding

while the collection was inspired by my friends’ early sexual experiences, I am looking for any first time experience — in fact, some of the most wonderful submissions have nothing to do with sex at all

W: Nothing to do with sex at all?

MB: You heard me: something at wesleyan that doesn’t have to do with sex at all!

that being said

a good story about tugging the towboat is absolutely encouraged

W: What’s so special about these stories? Just because they’re dormant doesn’t mean they need release…right? RIGHT?

MB: I think there are many dormant thingies that need release

but you are right it is not their dormancy that makes their release necessary or exciting

it is the fact that they are (and future submissions can be) moving stories from people in our community (and beyond)

the fact that they don’t get heard is just adding insult to injury

i also think it is a wonderful exercise for wesleyan students for two reasons

W: Please enumerate them.

MB: 1. i think that it is hard for many wesleyan students to submit something less than perfect

I think submitting to First Times (deadline pushed one more time to May 31st from May 15th because I would really love to get more submissions) is a great opportunity to just write the way that you would verbally tell a story and not worry about craftsman/womanship – and focus on pure content, which can then be fun to craft

and 2. I think that wesleyan students are insecure about their writing

but some of the most imperfectly written still convey unique voices that sound great paired with and in the context of/other stories in the collection

W: I’d really be interested to know how your time working as RHAF (Russell House Arts Fellow) has influenced you in terms of wanting to undertake a project like this.

MB: please don’t take letters off of my title: it’s actually SCRHAF

W: Gesundheit.

MB: Basically I have gotten to work with a lot of professional and student writers

and I have been inspired by the former to draw on the latter and to create a capstone project of my own creation as I wrap up this fellowship

W: What form will this collection take? Published online, in print? When can we expect the finished product? These are the tough logistical qs.

MB: I am designing and laying out the book with an online publishing site in order to produce physical copies

in short these will be real books

i hate to extinguish any kindling of excitement you had for an online version

if that’s your nook

then this is not your book

W: [Speechless]

MB: finally

amiright readers ;)

W: Anyscrhaf… can we graduating seniors expect to see a copy before shipping off to such exotic locations as home for the summer?

MB: that all depends on how many submissions (less than 1000 words to firsttimes2013@gmail) I can get!

again I have extended the deadline to May 31st in order to have a more voluminous volume – it is therefore more likely that they will be available in early June. However, there are many ways to get your hands on them even if you are far away, like ordering a copy from the online publisher. More on this at a later date.

W: Okey doke. Well, that about does it for us here. Anything you’d like to add?

MB: thanks to wesleying! To everyone else: share your stuff by May 31st!! And watch this.

Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees will be arriving on campus tomorrow for their annual <del>three-day Buffy marathon</del> Senior Week meeting, which traditionally takes place in the days leading up to Reunion & Commencement. Got a concern that you’d like the Board to address? Want to talk to them about your feelings? Just curious who is on that committee that makes all those decisions about campus in the first place? You can access a full list of the names, class years (nearly all are alumni), home states, and job titles of the Board members here, but unfortunately no contact information is provided, which is kind of weird when you really think about it. We’ve taken the liberty of amassing the Board members’ names and email addresses so you can contact them with thoughts or requests in advance of their meeting, which begins tomorrow:

Imam Adeel Zeb, Wesleyan’s Muslim Chaplain, writes in about the annual Senior Voices ceremony:

Dear Seniors,

Please save the date of May 25th 6PM for an integral part of the graduation weekend.

Senior voices is a ceremony in which a faculty member elected by members of the senior class, delivers a short talk addressed directly and specifically to graduating seniors. This year, we are delighted that Professor Elvin Lim has agreed to speak. In addition, three graduating seniors (Glenn Stowell ‘13, Jacob Eichengreen ’13, and Isaiah Sypher ‘13) will share their experiences before ending their Wesleyan career and beginning a new chapter of their lives. They will reflect, share and recap some of their unique and transformative moments from their years at Wes. Olivia May ’13, will be performing as well. Seniors will receive a red rose as a parting gift.

The event will take place in Memorial Chapel and will conclude by 7PM. This event is non-ticketed.

Please share this with friends and families as they will enjoy being part of the celebration as well.”

Date: Saturday, May 25
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Place: Memorial Chapel
Cost: Free

Several weeks ago, members of a student group calling themselves Wes, Divest! put together a petition calling on President Roth and the Board of Trustees to divest from fossil fuels. The petition has since amassed more than 250 signatures, many with accompanying messages of support. President Roth hasn’t yet publicly responded. When asked about the possibility of divestment at a WSA meeting in March, he suggested that it was highly unlikely—and argued that Wesleyan’s endowment shouldn’t be a “vehicle for social change.”

As the push for divestment first starts to heat up at Wesleyan (as it already has at Tufts, Amherst, and much of the ‘Cac), we’re presenting a guest perspective by Lauren Steiner ’79, an environmental activist and Wes alum who urges all Wesleyan students to take up the fight now, before it’s too late:

“Plant trees, create recycled art, tour a chestnut orchard, work on an organic garden and much more during Earth Month at Wesleyan!” So reads the first sentence of an article in the latest edition of The Wesleyan Connection emailed to me in April. As an environmental activist who attended the first Earth Day celebration 33 years ago at age 12 and who planned an LA solidarity rally to the D.C. Forward on Climate Rally this past February, I found this quite dismaying. When I was at Wesleyan between 1975 and 1979, when we hadn’t even heard of climate change, we were actively protesting threats to the environment and human health. In 1976 and 1977, activists from Wesleyan joined the Clamshell Alliance protesting the construction of the Seabrook nuclear power plant in New Hampshire. Where is that activism now when environmental threats are so much worse?

It is estimated that we have warmed the planet beyond the point of no return. Even if the developed world stopped using fossil fuels this minute, we could not reverse the change we have started. And we could hardly convince China and India, who are modernizing at a rapid pace, to prohibit their citizens from having new cars and refrigerators and all the other consumer products we have. The environmental NGOs inside the Beltway have done precious little to combat climate change, which is why a mild-mannered professor at Middlebury College named Bill McKibben founded 350.org in 2007. Through thousands of events all over the world, people spread the message that we needed to reduce carbon emissions 80% by 2050. As McKibben said at the Forward on Climate Rally, where over 50,000 of us froze our butts off, he wants to start a “grassroots movement for the environment.” For it is only when you have masses of people behind a cause, like the Civil Rights movement, can meaningful change really occur.

That is why the Sierra Club, for the first time in its 120-year history, changed its policy against civil disobedience. And that’s why thousands of activists all over the country have gotten themselves arrested by blocking the bulldozers constructing the southern half of the Keystone XL Pipeline in Winnsboro, Texas, and chaining themselves to the speakers at a pipeline conference in Dallas; and thousands of people young and old locked arms around the White House — all of them protesting the northern half of this same pipeline which will transport dirty tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada to Koch Brothers’ owned refineries in Port Arthur, Texas. As tar sands oil is far more carbon intensive than regular crude, releasing it will be “game over for the environment,” according to foremost NASA climate scientist James Hansen. Further, we will despoil our environment and threaten human health for no reason. Permanent jobs will be few once the pipeline is built, and the oil will be sold to the highest bidder on the open market, which will most likely be China. So this won’t even contribute to energy independence.

There were about 59 actions during Tar Sands Blockade Action Week in mid-March, including one I spoke at here in L.A. I don’t see any stories in The Wesleyan Connection about students or alumni joining this brave fight against the Keystone XL pipeline, although I’m sure there must have been some. And I didn’t see anything about the new Wesleyan chapter of 350.org’s latest campaign where students try to get their college to divest from fossil fuel companies. In fact, when I was at Wesleyan last December, I ran into President Roth, who attended Wesleyan with my graduating class, and asked him what he thought of the likelihood of Wesleyan doing this. His reply was very dismissive. Not only did he not see Wesleyan divesting, he also questioned the efficacy of the campaign during our era to get Wesleyan to divest from companies that did business with South Africa when I broached the analogy. He said he didn’t believe that campaign was responsible for bringing down the apartheid system. Well, maybe it was not entirely responsible. And maybe if every college divested from fossil fuel stocks, that would not make a significant dent in the use of fossil fuels in the U.S. But like all divestment campaigns, it would lend credence to the moral argument that we can no longer support the extraction of every last natural resource from the planet in increasingly dirty and unsafe ways, especially when there are renewable technologies we can invest in instead.

It bothers me that our current president seemed so apathetic to the most crucial issue of our day. And it troubles me even more that two of our most illustrious alumni, both of them Democrats, are actually on the wrong side of this issue. Alumnus Michael Bennet ’87, who is the junior senator from Colorado (and Wesleyan’s 2012 Commencement speaker, as well as the son of former president Doug Bennet ’59), just voted with all the Republicans and 16 other Democrats in favor of a non-binding GOP amendment tacked onto the budget bill, which supports the construction of the KXL Pipeline. It was said that the other Democrats who voted for this come from oil producing states and face tough re-election fights. Apparently that is not the case with Bennet. So why would he do it? Maybe it’s the same reason why our other distinguished alumnus from Colorado, John Hickenlooper ’74, the state’s current Governor (and Wesleyan’s 2010 Commencement speaker), would sue the city of Longmont (and threaten to sue the city of Fort Collins), Colorado, after they voted to impose bans on hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as fracking, within their city limits.

For those of you who don’t know, fracking is a relatively new process that has devastated towns in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, West Virginia. and New Mexico, among others. Companies inject a mix of water, sand and toxic chemicals into the ground at high pressures to release natural gas or in some cases oil. Anyone who has been following this issue knows that these chemicals, the identities of which are unknown due to former VP Dick Cheney exempting the fracking industry from the Safe Water Drinking Act, can leech into the aquifers. Anyone who has seen the movie Gasland watched people who live near fracked wells turn on their tap, light a match, and set their drinking water on fire. Farm animals all over the country are getting sick and many have died from the contaminants which have leeched into the soil.

In California, where they frack for oil, they are fracking in the middle of L.A. The Inglewood oil field is the largest urban oil field in the country. There is a cancer cluster there as well as increased incidences of asthma and other respiratory diseases. Citizens are bravely fighting back here and all over the country. We are working to get a ban on the fracking in California before it ramps up. They just found 15 billion barrels of oil under the Monterey Shale. Due to pressure from fractivists, the State of New York just extended its existing moratorium on fracking another two years. And another illustrious alumnus, Peter Shumlin ’79, Governor of Vermont, just signed that state’s ban on fracking. But former oil and gasman John Hickenlooper seeks not to support his constituents in their efforts to protect the environment, health, and livelihoods but to arrogantly defy local decision-making by threatening lawsuits. He has even bragged about drinking frack fluids.

For almost 40 years I have been so proud of Wesleyan students and alumni. I attribute much of my zeal for activism to what I experienced at Wesleyan both in the classroom and out. But I am not seeing the level of activism that is necessary for this existential fight. I have two sons, one in high school and one in college. And I have seriously considered advising them not to have children. That is how dire I think the situation is today. It’s all well and good to plant trees and grow organic gardens. We’re certainly going to need them when conditions really deteriorate and we can no longer grow and ship food the way we currently do. However we can’t grow enough trees to counteract the degree to which we are destroying the ability of the planet to sustain human life.

It’s time to take to the streets, people. In the next edition of The Wesleyan Connection, I want to read about the progress of the divestment campaign. Maybe they’ll revive the old Wesleyan tradition of sit-ins in the administration building until Roth agrees to recommend that Wesleyan sign on to the campaign. I want to ask students and alumni in Colorado who are reading this to flood Bennet and Hickenlooper’s offices with calls expressing dismay with their actions and a request to be good environmentalists like their fellow Wesleyan alum Peter Shumlin. In fact, everyone should look into the voting records of their representatives and make their voices known. But most importantly, we need people out in the streets organizing their neighbors, protesting, and practicing peaceful civil disobedience now, before it’s too late.

Stay tuned for a Wesleying feature on Wes, Divest!, the student group calling on Wesleyan’s administration to divest from fossil fuels companies. In the meantime, like the group on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, and sign their petition if you agree.

I have a tip for Wesleying but would like to remain anonymous. Earlier today someone wrote the names of the Mystical 7 — a Wesleyan student secret society — out in chalk on the sidewalk on Church St near Olin. Later in the day, a bunch of the people whose names had been written were seen standing over the writing, looking fairly panicked, and then after that someone crossed the names out with more chalk. Here’s a photo of the names crossed out. FUCK SOCIAL HIERARCHY!!!!

According to one Wesleying staffer, “It’s intact in at least two places right now (beginning of CFA path and College Row near Zelnick).” According to another Wesleying staffer fifteen minutes later, “Not anymore.” Hmm.

Anyway, I heard a rumor the Board of Trustees are coming later this week, as they typically do during Senior Week. Does anyone want to chalk all their names outside the Tomb with me??
