Do you contemplate infinity for the fun of it? I don’t know how much of us actually do because the administration doesn’t keep stats on it, but there’s plenty they do keep.

The Class of 2014 Profile is out, detailing aspects of those admitted to the Class of 2014 on the front and those enrolled in 2010-2014 for the first year on the back. Averaging out the Classes of 2011-2014, here’s what the Wesleyan population looks like:

Click here to view the PDF version because the site keeps unformatting the table here.

If you’re too lazy to view the document, it says that the Wesleyan student is a Caucasian female from the Mid-Atlantic who went to public school but is rich enough to pay full tuition. She’s taken Calc, Bio, Chem, Physics, and 4 years of a foreign language. She was in the top 10% of her high school class and scored 700 on each section of her SATs. She is Wesleyan. Or no, not necessarily. There’s plenty of people who fit the description on campus, but not necessarily. Simply skim the PDF to get a better view of the Wesleyan population.

Disclaimer: These statistics are by no means scientific. I simply averaged the listed statistics for the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 class years. Since the source document only profiles what the class years looked like for their first year, it doesn’t account for transfers in and out. Also, I’m not exactly a math genius so there’s probably mistakes which I’ll fix if you point them out in the comments.

Here’s what I thought was interesting:

The percentage of Caucasians isn’t listed. All the other groups, lumped together as “Student of Color,” are. If there’s 33.25% SOCs, there are 66.75% Caucasians and ‘others.’

Wesleyan is in New England, but largest geographic region that the student body draws from is the Mid-Atlantic.

10% of students reside outside the United States, but only 7.5% are International Students.

The Office of Admission screened 10,657 applications last year to end up with 750 matriculating students. That’s 7% of all applicants. That’s a lot of work.

[Office of Admission 2014 Profile]

If you’re an entering freshman, being familiar with technology and internet is important, especially in this day and age. The internet is your gateway to the world even when you’re within the Wesleyan bubble, but it can have both it’s limitations and it’s advantages. It can only help to learn these as quickly as possible.

The first thing you should know: WesTech. It refers to “staff members work in partnership with students, faculty and academic and administrative staff to incorporate the latest and most efficient technology into teaching and learning,” you might think. No, that’s ITS and how they describe themselves. Here’s what our Wes Lingo post says about WesTech:

WesTech is a word that will pop up every once in a while (via the ACB): “WesTech refers to everyone not DKE/Beta or mostly the ‘very Wesleyan’ population. It comes from the idea that Wesleyan has unattractive girls and bad sports and thus might as well be a technical school: WesTech.” Apparently, however, this is a term used mainly by other schools to make fun of Wesleyan, and has been appropriated by the sports teams as a label of pride (sports teams doing the ironic appropriation? Only at Wesleyan). A Techie was a term generally used by athletes to describe a “typical” Wesleyan student (artsy), or a “Techie.”

Now that you know what it means, this is required viewing: WesTech State of Mind.

Okay, let’s start off very appropriately with the ACB. You’ll probably find out what the ACB is soon enough if you haven’t already, and if you’re already a regular kudos to you – you’ve entered what seems to be a very popular Wes pastime. Some admit to posting or at least reading the ACB regularly, but others keep it a shameful secret. The truth is, every student on campus has been there at least once or twice. ACB stands for Anonymous Confession Board and can be used for everything from dishing dirt to asking questions about things you’re not sure of to engaging in scholarly discourse. It really depends on how you use it. The Wesleyan ACB, like many others, is hosted on collegeacb.com, which in turn is owned by Wesleyan’s own Peter Frank ‘12. It turns out you can even access the WesACB even easier: directly at wesacb.com. It turns out a lot of people still just come to Wesleying and click the link in the sidebar though. Note that the ACB should come with a disclaimer: it’s not necessarily the best representation of the Wesleyan community.

One of the advantages of being on campus is access to what’s known as “the hub” or WesHub (by now you might have noticed the leniency to add ‘Wes-’ in front of everything also applies to the internetz. The hub is a sort of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing network that’s restricted to the Wesleyan network – it’s kind of like (though not exactly) a Limewire 4.20 Wes Edition. When we uploaded a how-to back in 2008, we tagged it “Endeavours of Dubious Legality” and that description still stands. Wesleying doesn’t condemn or endorse the behavior, but that being said click here for the how-to. To access the hub, Mac users can use Shakespeer and PC users can use DC++. From what I’ve heard, students in woodframe houses or off-campus can use VPN.

News

It’s important to stay up-to-date on what’s been going on around campus. Don’t be fooled – Wesleyan might only have under 3,000 undergrads, but it’s quite a happening place. There’s several official and unofficial news sources to tell you about what’s already happened and what will happen. Personally, I use an RSS reader called Feedly to keep track of all my online news/blog reading. Here’s the Wes sources listed in my Feedly account:

Your Class Blog can contain important updates or interesting opportunities from your Class Dean. Even if you don’t always read it, you should keep an eye out for any important updates posted on it, although most important things will get emailed to you.

Roth on Wesleyan is President Roth’s outreach to the Wesleyan community, where he occasionally posts his Wes-related observations and encounters. With this and your class blog, just remember that Ms. Frizzle isn’t there handing out letters to your parents anymore. You’ll get emails, but ultimately t’s up to you to stay up-to-date with deadlines and the like.

The Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) Blog tells of what the WSA has accomplished and how this affects you. If you’re into accountability especially, read it.

WesLive is essentially the university administration’s reaction to Wesleying.

The Wesleyan Argus is the online edition of the official school newspaper, which publishes biweekly.

AuralWes is an independent blog, unaffiliated with the university that keeps track of “upcoming shows, concerts, festivals and other student-run, music-related events on campus.”

Wesleying, last but not least, is a 100% student-run and student-generated blog about all things Wesleyan – what goes on at Wes, what Wes students are doing, what Wes students care about. We’re not in any way affiliated with the university. We feature news, commentary, events, and random shit.

You can also use WesFeed, an RSS reader widget for PC and Mac, also available as an iPhone webapp. The Student Portfolio custom pages also use RSS feeds. You can add more feeds by clicking ‘Add Stuff’ under the panaroma picture. You can also follow many of these sources, such as Wesleying, via social networks like Facebook or Twitter.

ITS & Internet

When trying to access these services or other members of the World Wide Web, you might encounter issues. That brings us back to Information Technology Services (ITS). ITS maintains the internet connection, the computer labs, and lots of other technology related things at Wes – be thankful for these people. You can follow ITS on Twitter @wes_itsinfo.

ResNet is the “Wesleyan residential computer network” which connects most housing to the greater Wesleyan network. Very important for frosh: you will need an ethernet cable to connect to ResNet and register the first time they connect. Read more at the ITS ResNet page.

AirWes is the Wesleyan wireless wireless network, which you can connect to after registering on ResNet (the Wes is actually a suffix here!). AirWes comes in both the normal non-encrypted and the WPA-encrypted brands. Mac users are prompted to simply sign in each time they want to access the internet, whereas Windows users are subjected to dealing with some atrocious application called Cisco Clean Access (there’s little Linux love on the ITS site, they seem to mention mainly Mac and Windows). Read more about this on ITS’s Wesleyan Wireless Network page.

A complaint I’ve always had is the internet connection at Wesleyan, wired or wireless, is much too slow. In the dorms, streaming a movie or tv show can be choppy and you can forget about an iChat video chat sometimes. I don’t know how widespread this is, but that was my experience all over the Butts last year. I usually got 1 or 2 Mbps according to speed tests. At least it get’s better at night time – as of February 2010, bandwidth jumps from 130 to 200 megabytes between 8pm and 6am. Still, I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one happier if ITS somehow managed to increase our bandwidth substantially, day and night.

Student Suites

Thankfully we use Google Apps, which provides everyone with essentially a modified version of Google’s GMail, Calendar, Docs, and Pages. Many people, like Wes in the past, have to deal with crappy school based systems with limited functionality or aesthetic. It would be impossible to cover all the capabilities of these services, but I’d recommend reading the Google Apps Help whenever you don’t know how to do something or in general want to streamline something. Otherwise, GMail and the like are popular so there’s a lot of sites and pages out there that tell of tweaks and other how-tos you might be interested in.

Moodle, as of this year, is supposed to be our classroom organizing software. You can see who else is in the course, view documents uploaded by your professor, view grades, participate in forums, view video of class when applicable, etc. Wesleyan has used mostly BlackBoard until this approaching academic year, which will be a transition year to Moodle if all holds true. Upperclassmen and freshmen alike could benefit from this tour of Moodle, though intended for instructors.

Library

Even in 2010 with resources like Google and, dare I say, Wikipedia, libraries are still important hubs of information. Rather than let themselves fall behind, libraries today have evolved to include several electronic resources. To get through these next four years, you’re going to have to know how to use the online resources of the Wesleyan library.

Click to enlarge this and other images.

While most professors just post whatever readings you need on BlackBoard/Moodle, many use E-Res, short for the Electronic Reserves. If you have reading on the syllabus that’s not from a book and isn’t uploaded on BlackBoard/Moodle, check E-Res before you admit you were daydreaming during the first class. It’s not that hard to use E-Res, though some of us find it confusing at first. After you go to the library site at http://www.wesleyan.edu/library, click E-Res on the left hand side under Course Reserves (above About the Libraries). Once you’re there, it’s only a matter of finding the course. The easiest way is to click the right tab to find ‘Course Reseve Pages by Instructor‘. Clicking this leads to a drop-down menu, where you select whatever your professor’s name is. The courses ze uses E-Res for will appear. Now, click the Course Code for your class and then enter the password when prompted. The password for almost every single class is exactly that course code (i.e. the course WSLN101 would have the password WSLN101). If that’s not the password, then check your syllabus. There you’ll be presented with a list of files, mostly PDFs, usually organized alphabetically by author. Click the files you’ll need for that week and voilà, they should download immediately. Il est facile, n’est-ce pas?

The other aspect of the library’s online home you should be familiar with is mainly for research. Your average Google search won’t cut it. At the library’s homepage, the most prominent feature, on the top left, is ‘Search Resources’. If you’re searching for scholarly articles, this is where to go. Click the Articles tab and do a keyword search in databases like AcademicOneFile. These are resources that if I’m not mistaken the university pays a lot for – use them. You can also search through the Catalog to find books at the Wesleyan Library. If the book you want isn’t there, you should search the CTW consortium, a ConnColl-Trinity-Wes collaboration to loan books to one another when needed. If that still doesn’t yield your book, try WorldCat. I strongly recommend the library tour during orientation, especially since I didn’t take it.

For more Wesleyan related internet sources, go to the sidebar on any Wesleying page and see Links. Click the categories to drop down the individual links.

As part of our unofficial Orientation series, we decided it’d be a good idea to once again repost Holly and Xue’s awesome Frequently Asked Questionz regarding Dorm Living. In order to stay true to our founders’ ideology (we here at Wesleying are sticklers for ideological purity, after all), we only updated to reflect factual changes.

All is revealed under the cut:

Q: How are the dorms furnished?
A: Depends on your dorm. All rooms have a bed, desk, a chair or two, and some sort of dresser/closet. Most, but not all, also have shelving, whether it’s a separate bookcase or planks stapled to the wall.

What your room won’t have: a garbage can. See the Facebook group “They Took Our Trash Cans So Fauver Could Have Fucking Plasma TVs.”

Q: “Are there floor plans I can look at?”
A: No. (Whoops. Actually, now there are.)

Q: How do I get shit to stick to my walls?
A: Tack. Double-sided tape. Generally speaking, anything that doesn’t ruin your posters won’t stick to the cinderblock. The lucky fuckers in Fauver and Clark are again the exception, as they have drywall.

Q: How big are the freshman rooms?
A: Also depends. Here are our personal sizing estimates:

Clark: You will share a small room with another person.

Fauver: You will share an even smaller room with another person.

Butts: If you are lucky enough to have a single, you have the potential to be a Wesleyan sex god. However, if you are in one of the triples they have recently created, god help you.

Nics: Single? See Butts single. Two-room double? Not too bad, either. One-room double? Ehhh . . . It’s doable.

Westco: You’ll be too stoned to give a shit. Or, as one commenter pointed out: “so, as someone who lived in westco for two years and was from time to time not too stoned to give a shit, here’s a little more info- for the most part, westco is 2 room doubles and singles. of the 8 halls, 7 are like that, and the last one has 3 or 4 one room doubles, but they’re pretty big. and it’s a lot of fun, and a good location.” (Ed note: If you live in WestCo, bring earplugs.)

200 Church: An ‘08 student says: “Normal-ish in most all ways including size but the walls are so fucking thin you can hear people next door breathe. But geez, you can’t beat the location.”

Some kids will have pitifully small rooms; others could (and do) hold band practice in theirs. In the past some students have had doubles to themselves, they’ve been squeezing freshmen into triples recently, and so, with even more students in your class, we’ll have more students in triples. Though if you meet someone who has a double-sized single, it’s totally okay to kick them in the face. They’ll understand.

Q: Really?
A: No. You kick someone in the face and they’ll throw you out of school.

Q: HOLY SHIT, THERE ARE JUNIORS IN MY DORM!
A: Don’t be surprised if there are sophomores or even juniors living in your dorm/hall. It happens, this year especially because of a housing shortage. Be nice to them. Beg for food (they have all-points!). If anything, use them to go on liquor runs.

Q: How big are the beds?
A: Too big for your sheets (Twin Extra Long) and too small for imaginative sex.

Q: OMG I HATE MY ROOMMATE. Can I get rid of hir?
From here:

“A room freeze is in effect for the first two weeks of each semester. The third and fourth weeks of the semester are designated as a room-change period. Residents who wish to request a change in room assignment may do so during this time by obtaining a room-change form from any residential life staff member or from the Office of Residential Life. Students are required to follow the procedures outlined on the form to request the change.”

Psst—Reslife can still switch you out after the room-change period, but only if you have a damn good reason. But no matter what, remember that you don’t have to be best friends with your roommate, or even friends at all—just be sure to communicate and 99% of conflicts can be resolved.

Q: …’Hir?’
A: “Hir” and “ze” are gender-neutral pronouns used in place of “him/her” and “he/she,” respectively. There are people on campus who prefer to be addressed using gender-neutral pronouns. They’re also useful when you’re unsure of a person’s gender (i.e., referring to a previous poster on the ACB). Confused? Don’t worry, it’ll be explained during orientation.

Q: What’s with the gender neutral bathrooms?
A: Simple: In most of the dorms, you pee with the other gender(s). You’ll get used to it. (Update: Most halls vote on this during Orientation.)

Q: What are the fire hazard rules in my dorm? Will I get in trouble for bringing my psychadelic blacklight tapestries?! Fuck, man!
A: You can read all about the fire code here. Fire inspections are performed once or twice a year, but they don’t check every room, or even every dorm. Most people disregard the fire hazard policies entirely, but be careful—from someone who nearly burned down my room freshman year, the regulations are there for a reason, so be careful with your george foreman. And people do get fined. Quite a bit.

Q: Can I paint my room?
A: Yes, if you think it’s worth the risk. They’ve gotten stricter about room painting every year. Before, as long as you painted it back to white at the end of the year you could do whatever you wanted, but last year the RAs were told that inhabitants could be fined even if at any point during the year rooms were painted or otherwise defaced. And the fine is hefty—for a complete list of all the ridiculous shit you can be fined for, see here.

Q: My clothes smell funny. What should I do?
A: Febreeze.

Q: I tried that.
A: Ok, well, if you’re going to whine about it, there are washing machines all over the place. No, they don’t take quarters, so don’t bother—they take Middletown Cash, which you put on your WesID card with a credit card.

Q: WesID card? Middletown Cash? Points? WTF?
A: Your WesID card is your lifeline. You’ll get it during Orientation. Do not lose it or it’ll cost you money. You need it for food, mail, and to laugh at your ID photo when you’re a senior. Points are the default meal plan monopoly money; upperclassmen are on all-points, but frosh (and, starting recently, sophomores) have a set number of “meals” and then a handful of points. Middletown Cash is different from points. You can use them at certain restaurants in Middletown as well as for laundry, and they carry over from year to year (points don’t).

Q: So where do I eat?
A: See the updated campus dining post.

Q: How do I register my car?
A: Good question. Bring your insurance, registration, and $75 to the Office of Public Safety (on High Street). You will then get a sticker that you place in the rear window of your car designating that you have registered your car. On the sticker, it will indicate what year you are and thus the appropriate parking lot you should be in. All freshmen must park their cars in the V-lot, next to the tennis courts on Vine Street.

Q: I don’t have a car! What do I do???
A: To quote Droz from PCU (the movie everyone knows is based on Wesleyan and won’t shut up about it): “Will you have a car? Someone on your hall will. Find them and make friends with them on the first day.”

Q: HOW DO I GET HOME TO MOMMY AND DADDYZ?!
A: Sweet! A Link to another post!

Q: WHAT?! THAT’S IT?!
A: You can also ask for rides on the ACB.

Q: How far away is New York and/or Boston by car?
A: Shut up. You’ll never go.

Q: No, seriously.
A: Ok, well, New York and Boston are about two hours away each. Hartford is about 30 minutes away and so is New Haven. Maybe, I’m just guessing. Like I said, you will probably not go to these places on a regular basis.

Q: Should I bring a bike?
A: Yes and No. Bikes are really useful to have around on campus, especially to get to Middletown, but chances are you won’t need to go to Middletown often except for banking and maybe groceries (though the advent of the grocery section on amazon.com may change that forever [Ed note: It hasn't.]). Also, since the campus is pretty small, a bicycle really isn’t necessary. However, the Wesleyan Outing Club often sponsors bike rides throughout the area that are a lot of fun, and if you need to go from the Butts to the CFA in a hurry, a bike really comes in handy. However, make sure you bring a lock—while it doesn’t have to be a super duper indestructable one, you still don’t want to leave your bike unlocked for any length of time (Holly had her bike seat stolen her freshman year and has never forgiven the perpetrator, and Xue had an unlocked bike swiped from the front porch). As for bike safety, well . . . if I were a responsible human being I would tell you to bring a helmet and wear it always, but the truth is that most people on campus do not wear helmets. So, your call. Wesleyan also has a student-run bike club, Legit, that fixes bikes for free or just the price of parts.

Q: What’s in Middletown?
A: Quite a bit if you stop bitching about how it’s not New York or Boston. We’re gonna update this in a future post.

Q: Can I bring my dog/cat/bearded dragon?
A: No, sorry. Six(?) years ago, Reslife overhauled the faustian housing contract to exclude all incoming pets with the exception of fish.

However, this does mean you can bring awesome fish to Wesleyan.

Fish We Recommend:
- Barracuda
- Pirana
- Sharks
- Stingrays
- Candiru

Q: Where can I find liquid refreshment?
A: If you’re smart enough to get into Wesleyan, you’re smart enough to figure this out on your own within the first 48 hours of stepping onto campus.

Q: What about other . . . sorts of . . . err . . .
A: It will be offered to you. Don’t worry. If they aren’t offered to you, get cooler. See our guide to being cool (Ed note: Never actually written).

Q: I’m straight-edge/don’t drink/smoke. Will I be left out?
A: Not at all! You’ll be offered all kinds of things out of goodwill and the spirit of sharing. Just say no, repeat, and people will remember.

Q: What happens if I get sick?
A: First of all, get rid of that mindset and change that question to “What happens when I get sick,” because it will happen. Sorry. The most common illnesses that go around campus are the common cold, the flu, and mono. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to tough it out, though if you’re really ill, it’s worth it to e-mail your professors and usually they’ll grant you an extension or understand if you skip class (really! They’re nice people!). Weshop sells an assortment of cold remedies, and if you go to health services, they’ll give you a little cold-care pack of ibuprofen and cough drops.

Other rarer inflictions: You will sometimes hear people refer to “The Gastro”. This is because there was practically a gastroenteritis epidemic a few winters ago, a.k.a. the two-day shit-and-vomit extravaganza. The health center also offers gyno exams and tests for every STD imaginable, though you have to pay for those. They also offer Plan B and Orthotricyclen-Lo for ridiculously low subsidized prices. Also, Eclectic usually hosts free STD testing—last semester nobody had anything bad, which was very Go Wes! Medical emergency? Call P-safe and they’ll send a nice officer to escort you to the Middlesex Hospital. Super-duper medical emergency? Call 911. Estrella Lopez ‘07 adds:

It’s not a bad idea to bring some of the stuff mommy would give you if you were sick, because trekking to the health center when it is snowy and you are sick just to get some Advil is not fun.

A thermometer might be a good investment, too. Tea, honey, and cough drops are also your friends.

Q: Do I have to pay for my own condoms?
A: NO! Weswell, an office on the second floor of Davison Health Center, has an entire room of sexual health information, including a wide assortment of condoms, lubes, and other items. You can visit it at any time the health center is open and pick up what you need. Please don’t rely on your RA stocking the bathroom with condoms as the one big idiot on your hall will take them all and turn them into water balloons leaving you sexually stranded come Saturday night.

Q: My neighbor is hot. Should I . . .
A: NO! Hall booty is bad booty. You will hear this many times at Wesleyan throughout your career as a freshman. You will spend huge wads of time with the people on your hall for the first couple of months as you cling to each other for social warmth. This is all well and good and we all do it, but a warning:

DO NOT BY ANY MEANS SEX UP YOUR NEIGHBOR!

You share a bathroom with them. Your friends are their friends. You will see them in the hall every day. Every day. No exceptions. When you break up, you will see who they’re bringing home on Friday nights. They will see who you’re bringing home on Friday nights. They will see you not bringing anyone home on Friday night and playing the Sims 3: World Adventures (Reference updated to reflect advancements in technology —Ed) alone in your underwear.

It’s just not a good idea. I’ve seen hallcest end badly, very, very badly, and it ruins the entire hall for everyone.

Now I guess Dormcest should be addressed. Dormcest is not the same thing as Hallcest. I’m just going to say that and drop it. Thanks. Ok, bye.

Q: Do I really have to attend everything in the packet that’s required during Orientation week?
A: You’re in college. Nothing is mandatory anymore. That said, it’s still highly recommended—the Orientation staff has worked hard all summer putting these events together, they’re fun, you’ll meet people, and you might learn something in the process.

Q: How do I earn money?
A: If you’re on financial aid, go here and look at the job postings. Not work/study? Go look at the job postings anyways. Most of the time they will still hire you; they just can’t pay you as much. Science geek looking for a lab to call home? Find a faculty member that interests you, read a bit about their work, and then set up a meeting. Want some non-Wesleyan-affiliated monies? A lot of students sell their used textbooks on half.com or ebay.

Q: What are these mythical tunnels?
A: See here.

Q: Is there Greek life on campus?
A: Post forthcoming.

According to the Office of Admissions site, Wesleyan admits about 60 transfer students each year.

On the Class of 2013 blog, Dean Brown has just announced that there are 46 transfer students joining the sophomore class alone. She reports:

They are coming from countries as far away as India, China and Italy and from states as diverse as Colorado, Florida, Oregon, Wisconsin, Hawaii and Maine. Transferring from schools such as Georgetown, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Colgate, Tulane, Vanderbilt, UPenn and Bard

I’m not sure those states themselves are the most diverse, but they are a diverse assortment of states. Also, some of these transfers seem like they came from decently reputable colleges so kudos to us – I’ll take that as a compliment. It would be pretty interesting to compare that to a list of schools people transferred to away from Wes, but hopefully there’s not that many to mention in the first place (we do have a pretty decent retention rate*). I don’t think we’ll ever get such a list from the administration anyway.

Hopefully the Class of 2012 sheds some light on its transfers too.

So, while the administration photoshops some headshots into the class picture above, let’s welcome some new members of the Wes community we can’t say “GTFO frosh” to.

*It’s 95% according to Wesleyan’s College Board College Search profile.
