The 48 Hour Magazine Project Has Begun

Amy Mattox ’17 sends this message through the digital airwaves:

The theme of this year’s 48 hour magazine is FORTUNE. We’re thinking blind luck, superstition, the stock market, gambling, risks, classism, fortune cookies, horoscopes, chris brown, chance, O Fortuna, tarot, the oracle at delphi, lucky charms, coincidence, misfortune, etc.
From now until MIDNIGHT, please send any responses to FORTUNE to 48hourmag@gmail.com with your full name and class year.
We want to see your .poems, drawings, paintings, collages, personal essays, photo essays, found object, wild assemblages, deconstructive critiques, sculptures, science experiments, fiction, album reviews, comix, knock knock jokes, haiku, soundbites, genre-defiant mud, exposé reporting, video art, interviews, animation, songs, podcast materials, etc – make it fast, make it quick, make it in 12 hours or four minutes.
We’ll be tabling in Usdan from noon till 8, asking the serious and incisive questions about FORTUNE you’ve all been waiting for.
Some final words of wisdom:
Fortune is a horse with four white feet
& more importantly:: The cleanly are comfortable, the dirty are lucky.
god speed + good luck

It’s Up: The 48 Hour Magazine

man

It’s up. At noon today, after precisely 48 hours of frenzied writing, organizing, editing, copy-editing, layout sleeping, and God knows what else, the second annual 48 hour magazine project drew to a close. The magazine’s writing, artwork, video, and design (both online and in print) was entirely produced by a team of Wesleyan students. The theme is Inside Out, and the magazine is available online now (check it here) and in print around campus in the near future.

Here’s a note from the editors:

John Henry died with a hammer in his hand fighting machines. We used them to make a magazine that peers into the unseen spaces of the world around us: dreams, pubes, municipal charities, buildings, entrails, and the human heart. We spewed our innards, like the belchings of Vesuvius, for you to look upon.

The best thing about making a magazine speedily is that it turns out extra good. Lucky for you, that’s exactly what we did! Volunteers, some who had no previous experience, came together to create this project over the course of two days. The idea was to use the severe time constraint to induce creative frenzy. This publication is the result.

The 48 Hour Magazine submission period begins NOW. The theme of this issue is INSIDE OUT. We are looking for ANY form of writing, visual content, or film—especially materials created today. If you already have material that fits, send it in as well!

Submissions are due by midnight tonight to 48hourmag(at)gmail(dot)com. All submissions must include your name, class year, the title of the work, and preferably your phone number.

Here are some prompts to get you thinking:

48 Hour Magazine Informational Meeting

From Benjamin Soloway ’13:

Do you like writing, editing, web/print design, art, photography, filmmaking, and/or working frantically under time constraints? Come to an informational meeting for Wesleyan’s second annual 48 Hour Magazine Project, this Sunday at 9:30PM in Allbritton 311! (Facebook event here.)

Beginning at noon on Friday, February 1 (one week from today), we are going to write, edit, design, and publish a magazine within a self-imposed forty-eight hour time constraint. The magazine will revolve around a very broad and inclusive theme that will be announced at the start of the 48 hour period. The more people who help, the merrier! If you’ve never done anything like this, even better. We only have 48 hours of experience ourselves.

We are looking for people to submit their work, create new and interesting things, help sort through submissions, edit pieces, design the website, design the print publication, create illustrations, etc. This is a collaborative project—all are welcome to contribute. Contact Benjamin Soloway ’13 (bsoloway@wes) with any questions.

Date: Sunday, January 27
Time: 9:30PM
Place: Allbritton 311

Sign Up For WeSLAM’s 12-Hour Group Slam!

From WeSLAM:

I hope you all had relaxing, productive breaks because WeSLAM is back in action. Our next event is the 12-Hour Group Slam which will be occurring next Saturday, March 31st! What?! You don’t know what a 12-Hour Group Slam is?!? Well, here is a quick rundown of the event:

The 12-Hour Group Slam functions in a way similar to the 24-Hour Play Festival or 48-Hour Magazine. Essentially, we will collect a group of poets and split them into randomly-determined 2-person groups who will then proceed to write, edit, workshop, perfect, and slam a completely original group piece over the course of 12 hours. Groups will be randomly chosen, so please don’t come to this with the intention of writing with a certain person or with a piece already written. The point of the 12-Hour Group Slam is to promote the creation of collaborative new work and help you meet other poets in the Wesleyan community.

******To sign up please email Coz Berlin ’15 at cdeicke(at)wesleyan(dot)edu by TOMORROW (Wednesday, March 28th) at 5:00pm. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.******

The culminating event will be a single-round slam at the WestCo Lounge starting at 7:30pm this Saturday! It will follow the official WeSLAM rules (3m10s or less original poem, no props, no musical accompaniment, scores of 0.0 to 10.0, etc.). The winners will receive an avocado to split or something.

48 Hour Magazine Project

SUMBIT NOW!

Fetuses gestate for nine months, but next weekend we’re going to shove one out in just two days: we are going to write, edit, design, and publish a magazine over the course of forty-eight hours.

We’re seeking writers, photographers, artists, filmmakers, designers (both print and web), copy editors, and anyone else who thinks this is even remotely a good idea. Your efforts will define this project because we can only make it happen with a great team of contributors. You can spend anywhere from one to forty-eight hours with us, assisting with any or every step of the process. Experience is not necessary.
