~ACTUAL~ SPRING FLING 2019 LINEUP!!!

[Updated 5/7/19, 12:05 PM by michelle]: Due to some apparent wishful thinking and quick posting, I assumed that Japanese Breakfast was headlining Spring Fling. Turns out, Japanese Breakfast is actually Act 1, Rico Nasty is Act 2, and Jay Crutch is headlining for Act 3. The post has been updated to reflect that.

As you may have seen, we experienced some technical difficulties with the website over the weekend. Luckily, we’re back up and running, and excited to share this year’s actual Spring Fling 2019 headliners (sorry to disappoint those of you who were really looking forward to the Wiggles): Jay Critch, Rico Nasty, and Japanese Breakfast!!!

The Spring Fling Committee has created a playlist (on Spotify and Apple Music) to introduce you to the headliners’ music. You should also read on after the jump to learn more about these artists, the opener (TBD), and what you have to look forward to on May 9!

BandCampWes: ILLEGALIZE Returns with “Tortoise Style” EP

487754919-1

Ever wonder what kind of band it would take to win Battle of the Bands when most of your band members are freshmen? A damn good one. Sadly, it was 2001, before the birth of the great Wesleying, so I can’t make a witty phrase and have it link to an article about how awesome they were by someone who saw them first hand. I can, however, point you too their new album, Tortoise Style, a unique blend of soul, hip hop, and funk with a shake of Brazilian influence.

ILLEGALIZE was a fixture in the Wesleyan music scene during its time here (2001-2004), and after being apart for some time, they have reunited to create their first EP since 2002. The line up includes Tavi Fields ’01/’02, Jon “Phes” Souza ’04, Kieran Meadows ’04, Joaquin Cotler ’04/’05, and Sascha Weiss ’04. To add on to the Go Wes-ness I’m feeling, you should know that the band included Bill Sherman ’02, Tony/Grammy-winning music arranger from In The Heights and current Sesame Street music director.

Girl#$wag Takes the Crown at Battle of the Bands, Will Open Spring Fling

Not pictured: Girl#$wag. Sorry.

Last night at Eclectic, seven Wesleyan bands kept the crowd raging and vibing for almost three straight hours. The bands performed in the following order: Girl#$wag, Molly Rocket and the Crooks, O Presidente, The Japanese, Robert’s Don, Grand Cousin, and Treasure Island.

Girl#$wag began the show at around 9:30 p.m. to a large crowd of fist-pumpers and ragers. A bit more mellow acts followed after, but still maintained a vibrant crowd throughout. I ran away from the mosh pits that formed during The Japanese’s performance.

After a slow but incredible performance from Robert’s Don, things took a turn as established campus acts Grand Cousin and Treasure Island got the crowd jumping for every second.

If you don’t know already, the winning band gets to perform as the opener for Spring Fling. The thirteen-some judges stayed for the entirety of the show and deliberated afterwards which band would take the prize. (Disclosure: This blogger was among them.) After considering many different criteria, such as which band would translate well outdoors, get people dancing, excite the crowd for the rest of the concert, and more, the judges, myself including, held a vote and Girl#$wag came out on top.

Wesleyan has an almost scary amount of things you can check out for the next few days, so whether you’re an ED student with an unofficial host or someone who’s probably going to Brown but came here to skip school, take it all in.

Just to note a few highlights from the awesome lineup of events, today will feature performances including poetry by WeSLAM in 200 Church, Second Stage’s Eurydice, and the Asian culture show Mabuhay. Tomorrow includes Battle of the Bands, an Open Mic at 200 Church, and an a cappella concert in Olin. Different majors and departments are holding open houses. Most importantly, ITS Helpdesk will have drop-in hours all day; take advantage of this golden opportunity.

Here are the full schedules for today, Thursday, and Friday. Enjoy the nice weather and party hard.

Spring Flingers: An Announcement for an Announcement

Will “Waka Flocka” Feinstein ’13 and the rest of Spring Fling Committee have taken to YouTube with a cryptic message of sorts. Hold your horses—this isn’t the lineup announcement. It’s an announcement for an announcement, which is sort of like that time Will sent me a Facebook message to tell me he’d sent me an email (yesterday). Anyway, judging by the preview it looks like we got Avicii, so get psyched for public defecation.

Just kidding. The announcement itself is coming soon. In the meantime, apply to play at Battle of the Bands.
