WesWars: Re-instituting a Wesleyan Tradition

Inter-class competitions are a Wesleyan tradition: “Class Day” exercises took place from 1864 to 1935, “cannon scraps” were popular in the mid 1800s, and the “Key to the Gymnasium” was awarded to the “most popular class” for several decades following the construction of Fayerweather in 1894. With the help of University archivist Suzy Taraba, the Cardinal Council has dug up these old Wesleyan traditions and intends to redeploy them in a fresh, modern format of inter-class games called WesWars.

Old Wes Guys

When: October 30th, 4-6pm
Where: Base of Foss Hill
What: On-going games
When: October 31st- November 2nd / Where: Usdan Center & wherever you want!
Who, How, and/or WTF?: www.wesleyan.edu/gowes

The purpose of WesWars is to reinvigorate class and school spirit through friendly competition, and give us all a chance to connect with our alma mater in its entirety. The idea is simple. FIRST, take the fun and glory that was elementary school “field day,” but add Foss Hill and our unique student body to create one of those memorable Wesleyan experiences that WE ALL love and look forward to so much. SECOND, build off the energy of field day, Halloween weekend (and senior cocktails), and sustain it through week-long competitions within students groups & clubs, between students and faculty, and a culminating interactive Scavenger Hunt as a lead up to a tremendous Homecoming/Family Weekend.

A culminating presentation of the Class Key by President Michael Roth to the winning class at half-time of the Homecoming Football Game will end WesWars 2009 but re-codify a uniquely Wesleyan tradition. The sponsors of WesWars– University Relations, the Alumni Association, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Cardinal Council– are excited that you will participate, enjoy yourself and get to know your class a little better!

EVERYONE is welcome to suggest a game, publicize their club, organize a game, sell art, submit a trivia question, wear face paint, jump around in a moon bounce, or cheer on your classmates throughout. Creativity, involvement, and the Wesleyan X-factor should combine to lead one class to victory above all others. WHO’S GOT IT WES!?
