Applications to Wesleyan Surge by 4.18%

I googled “college admissions stock photo” and this is what came up. Can you dig it?

It’s been a rather turbulent few days for Wesleyan in the news, so here’s some positive news for a change. According to the New York Times’ The Choice blog (which has been surging along since the recent departure of its dear leader/resident Wesleyan hound Jacques Steinberg), total applications to Wesleyan rose by 4.18% for a total of 10,942 applicants for fall 2013. Since we’re all suckers for a good comparison chart, here’s how that stacks up with a few peer institutions:

It’s a comfortable leap (and eerily close to last year’s 4.5% rise in applications), but it’s nothing compared to Skidmore’s freakish 42% rise in applications.

2016: Here They Come

“;alsjdg;skjf;dgkjas;dklfgj FREAKING OUT!!”: Life Before College Finals

Here they come, here come the bastards. Like zombies emerging from the damp earth of Foss Chill, a few select members of the Wesleyan Class of 2016 (the last Wesleyan class I will ever substantially get to know, sad-face) will tear open their “big envelope” today (just kidding, it’s all online now) and promptly swarm the CollegeConfidential/Facebook/Twitter/Whateversphere with the profoundly un-cynical giddiness that only a purebred prefrosh can bring.

According to Wesleyan Admissions site, ED applicants can view their decisions online at 3 pm today. That’s t-minus thirty minutes and counting:

For both Early Decision 1 and Spring Transfer applicants the online decision page will be available this year from 3:00 pm EST Tuesday, December 13th through 5:00 pm EST Friday, January 6th.  The login link below will be live at that time.

For those students whose applications are denied, letters will be available online only. Related materials will be mailed to students who are admitted or offered a place on the waitlist.

As tradition goes, prefrosh are already going nuts over at the caged madhouse that s CollegeConfidential, though it’s nothing compared to the swarm of emotions you can expect after 3:00:

Wesleyan, Meet Scalia

Antonin Scalia just announced some mad spring tour dates, and we’re in luck: the Supreme Court justice will be performing his new post-dubstep free-jazz side project in Eclectic speaking at the university’s Hugo L. Black Lecture on Freedom of Expression this spring. Props to the Argus for breaking this one:

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will be the keynote speaker for the University’s Hugo L. Black Lecture on Freedom of Expression this upcoming spring, as confirmed by Dean of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Programs Gary Shaw. The lecture is scheduled to take place on March 8.

I’m pretty excited, and apparently so is CollegeConfidential:

In other news, Governor Rick Perry gets in his own guest appearance in Olin:
