Uncharacteristically Depressing Procrastination Destination Du Jour: If you think finals are torture…

Hello... America?

…than you have definitely not been poring over recent news (read: procrastinating) as much as I have. And you are most certainly not prepared for the torture you may now be subjected to in the future.

That’s right: “exactly 220 years to the date after the Bill of Rights was ratified, the US Senate today voted 86 to 13 in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, allowing the indefinite detention and torture of Americans.” Now ain’t that some cruel irony. This following yesterday’s vote, 283-136, on the same measure in the House.

The culprits, a bipartisan bunch, can be found here and here respectively. To voice your indignation at this flagrant desecration of your civil liberties, please take the time tomorrow to call your member of Congress here (as if they cared about YOUR rights. Hah!). The bill now heads to the President’s desk, where it is expected to be signed into law, following Obama’s extraordinary and appalling capitulation (if you think he might renege on his reversal, here’s the number to call).

I leave you with the following, which has been making the rounds on the internet today, in light of the news: “We need not throw away 200 years of American jurisprudence while we fight terrorism.” That was candidate Barack Obama on June 18th of 2008. Anyone else up for a primal scream?

Visiting Prof. Mike Williams on MSNBC, displays bucketloads of awesome

This is Mike. He’s a current congressional candidate for the 5th District of Connecticut. He also shares two thirds of a name with the guy who wrote the Imperial March and that song that plays in your head when you think of a geeky British boy with a bowl cut and a scar on his head (his full name, FYI, being Michael John Williams).

He’s also a visiting professor this year for the Government department, teaching pretty cool things like geopolitics, security issues, Cold War politics, and civil-military relations. According to my sources in his class (including but not limited to a young man from Pakistan with a questionable sense of humor), he’s a pretty damn good educator too.

Watch him on MSNBC, addressing an issue of great importance both personally and in principle with an eloquence, poise, and gravitas that can inspire nothing but awe.

Wesleying sends out the love over to your end, prof.

(Also, if you’re reading this, pls let me in your “The Armed Forces and Society” class next sem? pls pls pls pls)

It seems that Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), who represents the 3rd congressional district of Connecticut (which includes New Haven and the part of Middlesex County containing our own Middletown), is a fucking hipster.

Who knew? Some blogger started a “Rosa DeLauro Is A Fucking Hipster” Tumblr, compiling photos of the sartorially gifted congresswoman’s various good looks while on the job in a fitting LATFH tribute.

The photographic evidence is uncanny:
