capital in the 21st century

Join a panel of Wesleyan professors for a lively debate about Capital in the Twenty-First Century by French economist Thomas Piketty. In his monumental book, Piketty analyzes data from 20 countries, going as far back as the 18th century. His discussion of the political sources of the distribution of income; his attempt to systematically examine how dynamics of capitalism breed wealth concentration; and his willingness to consider how government policies might save capitalism from itself have made him one of the most influential economists of our era.

Israeli Democracy: What Threatens it and How to Save it, with Author Gershom Gorenberg

jstreetEmily Greenspan ’16 has a message for you:

J Street U invites you to think about the future of Israeli Democracy, and admire this awesome beard.

Gershom Gorenberg is the author of The Unmaking of Israel, a provocative examination of Israeli history that describes the crisis of Israeli democracy and lays out a vision for the country’s future.

“Until I read The Unmaking of Israel,” says novelist Michael Chabon, “I didn’t think it could be possible to feel more despairing, and then more terribly hopeful, about Israel.”

Gorenberg’s previous book is The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977. The New York Times called it, “Remarkably insightful … A groundbreaking revision that deserves to reframe the entire debate.”

He has written for the New York Times Magazine, Haaretz and Foreign Policy Magazine. He lives in Jerusalem.

Come join us for what will be a great talk and Q&A!

Liveblog: WSA Vice-Presidential Debate:

Well, everyone else abandoned me, so I’m liveblogging this thing alone. Nicole Brenner ’15 is moderating, Chloe Murtagh ’15 and Andrew Trexler ’14 are debating.

I’ll write more shit here once I get a moment. No one from Wesleying is helping me out today so I’m doing this as Chloe is doing her opening statement.

As we mentioned yesterday, voting in the election is now open at this link, from now until Friday at 11:59 p.m. Our group interview with the presidential and vice-presidential candidates will be posted before then.

Liveblog: WSA Presidential Debate

Greetings from Usdan. The esteemed BZOD and I are awaiting the start of the annual WSA Presidential Debate, featuring presidential candidates Mari Jarris ’14, Nicole Updegrove ’14, and Keith Conway ’16 (each of whom you’ll get to know more when we publish a group interview with the candidates in a few days). As I write this, BZOD is shamelessly fraternizing with the candidates, who are all smiling in a most political manner. We’re hoping to continue a tradition started by the great frostedmoose several years ago, though we can’t expect to match his poetic fervor or unparalleled wit. We can only hope he’s following along somewhere shaking his head furiously and deliriously throwing cat memes at a wall.

Apparently this debate is livestreaming somewhere, but I don’t have time to find the link because it’s about to start. If you care enough to livestream it, you’re probably here in Usdan anyway.

Liveblog entries appear after the jump.

WSA Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates

President and Vice Presidential DebateCome see your favorite presidential and vice presidential candidates verbally battle it out! Questions from any and all are welcomed throughout the debates (and in advance by email).

The President and Vice President set the direction for the Assembly, and bears a great deal of influence as the representative of the student voice. They occupy a critical space in dialogue with the administration, faculty, and other members of the community. They have input on everything from assembly and university policy to budgetary issues, and almost every possible issue that affects students.
