Studio 54 at Psi U

The year is 1977. Welcome to Studio 54, New York City’s center for celebrity, scandal, miscellaneous substances, bathtubs, the occasional orgy, and of course… some good fucking disco beats. Anybody who’s anybody is there… this club is wild, nay…it’s off the hook and it’s coming to Psi U. That’s right. For one night, Studio 54 will be taking over the Wesleyan party scene in a huge way. And rather than allowing only the biggest name celebs around, you all are invited!!! I know… it’s awesome.

So get yourselves over to Psi U this Saturday, and remember to throw on your best 70s outfit and get in free ($2 at the door otherwise). Dress like a celebrity and you may get a high five. Show up early! Show up late! Bring a date! (Consent isn’t consent unless it’s enthusiastic,) and as always, show up ready to dance, grind, and do your best to not contain yourself.

And for those of you who aren’t confident in your dancing abilities, just remember that disco was created by people like you.

Date: Dec. 4 – Dec. 5
Time: 9:30 PM – 1:00 AM
Place: Psi Upsilon
Potential Gains: Fame, infamy, and the occasional orgy

Senior Recital: Love is Overtaking Us

Ben Seretan ’10 is always running around making pretty music. You might have heard him playing with Duchampion, or winning Awesomefest with Sweaty Boys, or making people weep into their paninos at Red and Black. This year, when he hasn’t been doing those things, he’s probably been (a) practicing for one of said performances, (b) taking advantage of happy hour at ION, or (c) putting together a thesis exploring the music of Arthur Russell. Who’s Arthur Russell, you may ask? Ben explains:

Arthur Russell is a queer Iowan Buddhist cello player country music lover swimmer disco maker avant garde Indian music bi-coastal hip hop drum machine singer. His music is about love and fun and swimming and being close to people and being so happy that you cry.

Ben writes lyrics about the tiny things that people think about when they’re not talking, like the anatomy of the human hand or the visual structure of trees. His songs are catchy, fun, and technically tight, but when he breaks through his veneer of restraint, he has a whole lotta vocal and guitar power to release. His musical persona is a hardened wild west cow herder dressed proudly in Donna Summers’ favorite sequined dress–he’ll make listeners feel nostalgic for an ill-defined Old West as he performs under a disco ball. The man has a solid stage presence.

This Friday, Ben will be performing the recital part of his thesis. He’ll play some Arthur Russell songs with some musically talented buddies, he’ll play some Arthur Russell songs by himself, and he’ll play some of his own songs.

Date: Friday, March 26
Time: 9:00 PM
Place: CFA Hall (the old CFA Cinema)

Put on your boogie shoes… in Usdan!

OK, so we can all assume that they won’t be blaring disco. But the mysteriously vague Usdan Staff informed us today, through an all-campus email, that music can now be played in both sides of the Marketplace dining area. Now, if only they’d fix the lighting problems…In other Usdan news:

  • “Directional signs are now located at crossroads on the first floor to help you navigate the facility.”
  • “You will also now find new cork boards for posting flyers in the basement, first floor, and second floor levels of the building.”
  • “A foosball table was recently added to the 2 pool and 1 ping pong table available for use [in the MPR], all free of charge.”
