Food Not Bombs Points Drive

food not bombs and police

Josh Krugman ’13 writes in:Do you have lots of extra points?

Consider donating them to

MIDDLETOWN FOOD NOT BOMBS!

All day Monday.

Just tell the cashiers in Weshop how many points you want to donate and they’ll do it right along with your purchase!

Our points get erased at the end of the year so this is a good way not to waste them while supporting food justice and activism in Middletown.

The bulk dry goods that FNB buys every year with donated points form the staple of our meals throughout the year!

Thank you!

Also, the Food Not Bombs meal happens every Sunday at 1 p.m. on the sidewalk outside of the Buttonwood Tree, 604 Main St. in Middletown. Good food, good talk, and sometimes drumming!

Date: Today, April 28, 2014

Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry Drive

From Kirby Sokolow ’14:

Wesleyan AMSA will be holding a registration drive for the Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry! Every four minutes, one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Seventy percent of all patients who need a transplant don’t have a matched donor in their family. Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell and other life-threatening diseases depend on the Be The Match Registry® to find a match to save their life.
Joining the registry is only paper work and a cheek swab– no bone marrow donations will be taken at the drive.
You can find out what it means to join the registry by stopping by the drive and you can find additional information on the Be the Match website!
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer but cannot attend
the meeting, feel free to contact Kirby Sokolow at asokolow[at]wesleyan[dot]edu or Swetha Mummini at smummini[at]wesleyan[dot]edu.

Date: Friday, November 8
Time: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Place: Usdan 108

Roth + Weil = $$$ 4 U(!!!)

“And just like he said, I coulda told ya / M. Roth, the holder of a boulder, the money folder.”

Michael Roth and Professor Kari Weil, notorious cutest couple of Arguses past, have opted to donate $100,000 to Wesleyan’s endowment for financial aid. Repeat for emphasis: President Roth and Professor Kari Weil have opted to donate $100,000 to Wesleyan’s endowment for financial aid. Special thanks to the Wesleyan Connection for the tip, and slightly specialer thanks to Roth and Weil for, err, the 100 grand. Seriously: thanks, you guys! This is grand stuff. As Trustee-in-Chief Joshua Boger ’73 wisely put it,

I can’t thank Michael and Kari enough for their generosity. Their gift represents the kind of ‘stretch gift’ that we are frequently soliciting from other alumni and their families, and I hope that all members of the Wesleyan community will follow their lead in making Wesleyan a philanthropic priority.

According to the Connection report, Wes is spending $47 million on financial aid this academic year. (In 2011, you may recall, Wes raised $37.74 million, nearly half of which went towards aid. At the time, Roth spoke hopefully about strengthening the university’s “economic foundation” and minimizing the need to hike tuition again, as Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees voted to do a year ago this week.)

Spring Blood Drive

Jennifer Paykin ’12 sends in a picture of Kool-Aid Pitcher’s cousin, also announces dates for this semester’s blood drive:

It’s time again for Wesleyan’s biannual blood drive! The drive will be held on Monday April 11 and Tuesday April 12 from 11:45 – 5:00 in Beckham Hall. To sign up for an appointment, go to the Red Cross website (www.redcrossblood.org) at least 24 hours in advance and search for sponsor code WesleyanU. To find out about eligibility requirements and more volunteer opportunities check out the Wesleyan Blood Drive home page linked to below.

Be sure to drink lots of water and eat iron-rich foods before your appointment, which usually will take an hour. Remember, a single donation can provide enough blood to help three people. Sign up today, or email jpaykin(at)wesleyan(dot)edu or yfang(at)wesleyan(dot)com with questions.
