This is fos’ update of sdz‘s update of wilk‘s update from 2016 as part of our 2019 Unofficial Orientation Series. A quick reminder that you can check out our welcome post here and past years’ series here.

So this article is gonna be interesting. It includes an aggregation of updates from both 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. These years included some pretty pivotal Greek Life related things that you probably wanna know about. Some of you may be surprised that we even have Greek life (apparently other lib arts schools don’t?). Others might have already delved into our storied Greek Life related past. Are we about to tell you that Wes Greek Life is back to its prime? No. But there’s some new stuff here that you’re probably gonna wanna know, so it’s probably best that you hit the jump.

Eclectic Approved for Program Housing

After a year of being on probation for failing the URLC housing assessment and then publishing a troubling application, Eclectic Society will be returning to 200 High Street for the 2018-2019 year. Just after we all returned after being away for winter break, Fran Koerting sent an email notifying us that the Residential Life Committee decided that Eclectic will be regaining its program house status:

LIVEBLOG: Eclectic Community Forum

We’re liveblogging tonight’s Eclectic Community Forum so that those who can’t attend know what’s being discussed in the meeting. Eclectic is reapplying for program housing status on Campus. Tonight’s forum will be co-hosted by the Undergraduate Residential Live Committee (URLC) and Eclectic members. Eclectic members will give a presentation and then the forum will be opened to the greater Wesleyan community.

Residents of Music House Write Letter to ResLife, Proposing to Stay in 200 High Street

muho

Earlier today, members of Music House sent a letter to Wesleying proposing that Music House remain in 200 High Street next school year, sharing the space with the newly-approved Movement House. The letter cites the building’s status as the largest residential concert venue on campus as indirectly creating a workload that is too great for one house manager to maintain, giving specific examples from experiences within Music House that happened last semester. As of now, Movement House will be the only program house occupying the space next year.

The letter says that the residents of Music House who are not satisfied with ResLife’s standing decision to move the program house into a shared space with Full House for next school year and are therefore endorsing the proposal for sharing 200 High with Movement House, are hoping to meet with Movement House residents this Friday. Read past the jump for the full-text of the letter:

Eclectic Does Not Gain Program House Status for 2017-2018 School Year

On Wednesday night, the WSA held a town hall meeting to have a campus wide conversation about Eclectic and the future of 200 High Street, which is currently Music House. According to Director of ResLife Fran Koerting, Eclectic originally lost their program housing status after repeatedly failing to get a 16 out of 21 on the URLC’s housing assessment and being put on probation, with the final straw being the application from last fall.

The meeting was attended by a variety of students, some who are still a part of Eclectic, others who were in Eclectic but have since left, and many students who are not members of Eclectic as well. Ultimately, the URLC voted not to let Eclectic obtain program house status for the 2017-2018 school year. There were 0 votes in favor, 4 opposed, 2 abstentions, and 1 recusal. The future of 200 High will be considered separately by the URLC, and they have said that they will take the wider campus community’s opinion strongly into consideration.

This is part of our 2016 Unofficial Orientation Series. A quick reminder that you can check out the welcome post here and past years’ series here.

This one is gonna be fun to write. If you’re reading this, odds are you’re internally pondering one or more of the following three questions: (1) Wait, I thought Wes didn’t have Greek Life like all the other small liberal arts colleges?, (2) Is wilk about to tell me that the frats are back??? Keg! Keg! Keg! Keg! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven!, or (3) I thought Greece left the EU?

In short, here are the answers:

Note: This interview discusses sexual assault. It was also conducted prior to Winter Break and doesn’t reflect certain changes on campus since then.

I knock at some small senior house right off of Cross street, and a muffled cry of, “Be right there,” can be heard from behind its chipping red door. The door opens, and this is the first and last time that I ever meet Karmenife Paulino ’15 – I follow curly, auburn hair up the narrow staircase as we say our hello’s and I am taken to her room. Her room is cozy and dim, with colored lights strung up on the left wall next to artwork and posters. My eyes graze over the mid-packing mess that I’ve interrupted, led to a mannequin in bondage gear leaning on the right wall.

She sits on her bed, crosslegged and comfortable, her body turned at an angle from mine, as I take a seat on the bottom most edge and gracelessly stumble through introductions. She’s patient as I rummage through my bag for my questions, and we begin.

What exactly is Reclamation?
