BREAKING: Music House Moving into Eclectic’s House Starting Fall 2016

Last semester, students campaigned against Eclectic’s history of enabling racism and sexual violence with images like this.

NOTE: Updates are provided at the bottom of the post.

Thursday night, we received knowledge that Fran Koerting, Director of Reslife has reached out to the residents of Music House offering the program house the space of 200 High Street, home to Eclectic Society since 1906, for the 2016-2017 academic year. Koerting confirmed this at 12:15PM today and said that an announcement email will be sent around early this afternoon.

The residents of Music House, after discussion, decided that they would accept Reslife’s offer for the space, which the University has owned since the 1970s when Eclectic alumni sold the house to Wesleyan for $1. When asked about offering the space of 200 High Street, Fran Koerting stated:

Eclectic in the 90s (feat. An Electric Chair)

“A place where strange people can come together and do strange things,” says radical (but still chill) dudebro Benjy while sitting on a giant red velvet chair. Benjy is a member of Eclectic duh.

A friend showed me this video today, and I couldn’t help but think that this is some ridic Wesleyan episode of MTV’s The Real World from 1994. The first 2 minutes of this random ass video are dedicated to 90s Eclectic for some reason. But, anyways, this has inspired me to “let my freak flag fly” and will thus be adopting this aesthetic for the next 2 weeks:

Responding to Eclectic’s Problematic Application for New Members

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 7.40.51 PM

This past week, news broke that Eclectic’s paper application for new members had a page asking people to complete fill-in-the-blanks with racial slurs.

Ocean Gao ’19 wrote a post on her blog about her feelings on Eclectic’s app, and she has given us permission to repost her thoughts here. We have also included the official apology that Eclectic issued after receiving backlash from many students regarding the application’s contents. We will not be including images of the Eclectic application in this post, but one can be found above on Gao’s blog.

Additionally, we understand that students (both Eclectic members and non-members alike) have written many statements on social media about the incident. If any of those students are interested in sharing their pieces on this post, feel free to email us at staff(at)wesleying(dot)org.

From Angus Macdonald ’16:

VIO?MIRÉ:

“From the swell of cello to the ripple of pump organ to the baronial flight of trombone to those voices – soaring, too, on surging wings of their own design – Vio/Mirè is a band destined to be many things. But first and foremost, when you hear the hum and thrum of their music, and can even see it come into view, over the treetops or rising from the earth, what they are is a band borne of the land, sea, and mountains jutting into canyons of sky.”

Salon Loves Our Sex Parties, But Is Salon Liberated and Free?

The first image that came up when I googled “hispter party.”  C/o The Peanuts Gang

7699112786_4bd97f5e37_z

Benjamin Winterhalter ’07 really wants you to know that he’s cool—but not, like, Pitchfork-Modest-Mouse-hipster-on-a-bicycle cool. No, he was cool before cool even knew it was cool. That, I assume, was the point of his Salon article “What I learned at the hipster sex party,” which asks important questions in its subtitle, like, “The place was so hip even the guy from MGMT was there. But were we liberated and free? I guess so.”

He explains up-front what he’s about to share with us: “What follows is my best reconstruction of the events of a party that took place in 2003 on the campus of Wesleyan University, one of the most hipster colleges in America.” Actually, not according to the Huffington Post, or Her Campus, or College Magazine. We’re still getting over the rejections. “It’s a good illustration of certain facets of hipster culture.” Fascinating. “It involves a minor brush with fame.”

I don’t feel like recounting what he says in this story. Read it, or don’t. It’s fun to note, though, that the author was a Philosophy and French double major, did crew, and wrote his honors thesis on The Edge of the World: Facts, Solipsism, and Self-Knowledge in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus.
