Back in November we posted about Spoken Phor (Patrick Salazar ’13), a talented sophomore emcee who had just released a debut mixtape, Half Way There, full of “well-constructed verses with unflappable confidence.”
Today Salazar sends in a new video he’s just completed for that mixtape’s title track. The project is chock full of other Wes kids, too: the song was produced by Jared Paul ’11, while Matt Schaff ’11 and Ian Park ’11 put this hard-hitting, gorgeously filmed video together.
This is not your typical Wesleyan-style funk-inflected indie hip hop. Spoken Phor’s verses are wrenching, tightly wound rhymes, concerned with broken families and personal struggle. His production is a sparse tapestry of cold synths and winding electro-beats. It’s worth hearing.
Here’s the video.
