Unofficial Orientation 2023: WesAdmits Culture

Somewhere between the invention of Facebook and right this second came the very first WesAdmits. You’re likely already familiar with WesAdmits 2027 – it’s the Facebook group you got added to with your acceptance and where you learned that every single admitted student ever just happens to like both chill nights in and fun nights out. After the introductory formalities in the spring, WesAdmits opens up to the rest of Wes’s student body and becomes a main forum for student communication – lost WesIDs, student plays, club sign ups, abstract questions, polemic debate – you’ll find it all in WesAdmits. Shit goes down in WesAdmits. Here are some of our tips and tricks for learning your way around the forum:

Someone Made a Crushes Facebook Group and Why the Fuck are WE not CRUSHED On?!

I’m not salty that someone hasn’t professed their crush on me.

But I am currently matching my red beret with my red lipstick because ~studying abroad in Europe~, and I’m just,,,disappointed.

In case you didn’t see the newest development in “Wesleyan attempts to make another Facebook page outside of Soggy We$ Memes,” someone decided to create a Wesleyan Crushes Facebook group. Now, because I’m hopeful that one day Wesleyan will transform into a campus with some actual romance (and maybe also because I just made a playlist called “when in the mood for monogamy”), I’m willing to find my Wesleyan husband™ not via a Pi Cafe Romance™, but through a community with Roth’s face as the profile pic. I’ve been single for way too long.

Since I’m six hours ahead of ya’ll, I was informed of this new matchmaking/hookup-making/maybe even wholesome content-making platform at around 5 AM. And I’m not sure how I coherently sent this message to the editors’ chat, but this happened:

Now, I’ve had my hand in Internet Dating Culture™ for the purposes of making a fool of myself on Wesleying. This time, I’ve taken it upon myself to make sure the Wesleying Editors are painted in the best light so that, dear Wesleyan community, we can receive validation via this platform.

Unofficial Orientation 2018: Social Media Directory

This is a repost of a repost Wilk’s updated repost of caro‘s aggregation station social media directory that Gabe originally made. If you want your!! social media up here, hit us up staff[at]wesleying[dot]org

These kids aren't being ironic enough on their instagram probably. Do they even go to Wes jfc

Ya if you try to take a photo like this, pls just leave campus. there’s not a single nalgene in sight, and wtf is that plain-ass skateboard?

This is part of our 2018 Unofficial Orientation Series. A quick reminder that you can check out the welcome post here and past years’ series here.

At some point in your career at Wesleyan, The Argus just won’t come out soon enough or—heaven forbid—Wesleying won’t update quick enough for you to get some vital update or piece of news. Luckily for all of us, the fine people in charge of and around Wesleyan University are on top of this social media wagon, and sometimes, Facebook pages and Twitter feeds are your best shot for up-to-the-minute information. But even beyond the immediate, some of these pages and feeds, run by the departments or by student groups or even by anonymous individuals, can be interesting, thought-provoking, hilarious, and full of discussions, tips, commentary, and quips that will enrich your experience here. Or at the very least, give you a cheap laugh.

Here’s an updated collection of the essential (and currently active) social media accounts, as well as some of Wesleying’s personal favorites. This list isn’t complete, and new accounts are being created every year. Like, does Summies really need a parody Twitter? Chime in once again for things you think were passed over, because the official school-approved list (which doesn’t even include Wesleying) just won’t suffice. There are also individual Twitter feeds (both student and alumni) you’ll find useful to follow, but you’re on your own for discovering those. Nobody uses Pinterest, so don’t bother looking.

Wesleying Unofficial Orientation Series 2015: Social Media Directory

This is an updated repost of Gabe‘s legendary social media directory from last year. Nothing can really make it better, so I just updated the links and added, like, 2 jokes.

Hormones of Wesleyan Meets Humans of New York

“I realize now that my parents are just regular people with flaws, and my dad is not a villain. He’s just an asshole.”

When Rachel K. ‘17 walked into a crowded Times Square subway station on January 18th, she thought her trip would be the continuation of a decidedly average day. Instead, Rachel met Brandon Stanton, founder of the photoblog Humans of New York. Rachel was soon featured on the page, where her post received over 250,000 likes. Her newfound Facebook celebrity caused such a stir that she was forced to change her name because of all the online attention she was receiving.

Rachel, who is a prominent stand-up comedian on campus (she opened for Chris Gethard last semester) and a member of the sketch comedy group LunchBox, is the creator of a popular mock-HONY page appropriately titled “Hormones of Wesleyan.”

astag_rocky sat down with Rachel for her first official Wesleying interview. Her last name was abbreviated to protect her privacy.

After the success of last year’s list, I’ve updated our collection of the essential (and currently active) social media accounts, as well as some of Wesleying’s personal favorites. Your suggestions in the comments and on Twitter are now included—but still, this isn’t complete, and new accounts are being created every year: Roth-dog himself only got his Twitter going recently (and has 1K followers fewer than us! Suck it!). Chime in once again for things you think were passed over, because the official school-approved list (which doesn’t even include Wesleying) just won’t suffice. At some point in your career at Wesleyan, The Argus just won’t come out soon enough or – heaven forbid – Wesleying won’t update quick enough for you to get some vital update or piece of news. This here is an age of new journalism, haven’t you heard? Social media is the new town crier.

I’ve assembled a list of the essential (and currently active) ones, as well as some of Wesleying’s personal favorites, but this is by no means a complete list. Because there is no other list of pages around (except for the un-updated, official school-approved one), I may have missed a few. We can always add more. There are also individual Twitter feeds you’ll find are useful to follow, but you’re on your own for discovering those. Nobody uses Pinterest, so don’t bother looking.

Because You’re Not Yet Tired of Campus Snow Photos That All Look Largely Indistinguishable From Each Other

Here’s yet another batch, courtesy of an album by the Wesleyan University Facebook page. All photos by Dat Vu ’15, Shauna Pratt ’13, and a few others who are individually credited in the Facebook captions if you feel like checking. As one Old Fogie ’82 noted in the comments section, “Great photos…..in our day this would have been an invitation to grab trays from MoCon to ‘sled’ down Foss Hill.”

lol, “sledding”? Who needs to go “sledding” when we have “Tumblrpads” and “Smart Phones”!??

Ghedira ’16 Creates Video to Support Tunisia

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY4KcI9TIXQ&feature=player_embedded#t=0s]

Tunisia’s secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid was shot this past Wednesday while leaving his house. Many Tunisians believed this assassination was ordered by the government, and huge protests followed soon after the event. Mahmoud Ghedira ’16, a Tunisian native, wanted to do something to help his home country during its time of need, and he settled on making a video with some of his Tunisian friends who also attend American schools.

“The goal of the video is to express our support to Tunisia,” Mahmoud explains, “and to say that even though we’re 6000 miles away, we know what [the Tunisian people] are going through. We believe that we can overcome this without violence. Our message is a message for peace and [a message] against all this political violence that is happening right now.”

Mahmoud (speaking at 2:40 in the recording) hoped the video would uplift the spirits of his fellow Tunisians. But what he didn’t expect was how many other people would be tuning in as well; the YouTube clip has gotten over 11,000 views in less than two days and is set to premiere on Tunisian national television soon.

Inspired by the amount of attention the video was receiving, Mahmoud decided to expand the social media presence of the Tunisian students’ cause.

Counter-WesleyingSpeak: There Are Larger Issues Than Facebook

This post is in response to Tragedy and Facebook Statuses, a recent “WesleyingSpeak” by tuna.

sandy-hook-shooting_10842950-1

My mother texted me Friday morning with news of the Sandy Hook shooting. At first I was just kind of numb. I combed through all my usual news sources, hoping to find more information. At this point, only the shooter had been confirmed dead. I went to lunch and continued to study for my film final.

However, about an hour before I took the test, “confirmed” reports started emerging: Around 26-28 people were murdered, most of them children, all of them shot down by a single, initially misidentified man. Again, I was overtaken by numbness. I tried to put the tragedy out of my head as I worked through my final, and afterwards I just sort of collapsed in my room. My mom called to tell me she loved me, and I watched Obama’s speech. I cried.

I thought about all of those kids who wouldn’t go home that day. I tried to think about what I was doing at that age. Little six-year-old me would’ve been swinging in the backyard, watching Scooby-Doo, and begging her mom to read me just one more picture book. I couldn’t help but think about the lives of these children, past, present, and future.

And then I wrote a Facebook status:
