The weather is really nice today! The sun is out, the air is not too cool, and it’s not raining/sleeting/hailing/raining fire from the sky! Also there’s lots of pretty leaves turning colors on the trees!
Foss is full of jubilant undergrads playing sports, doing homework, partaking in ~activites~, and just hanging out enjoying this beautiful day!

Did you guess that this year’s Spring Fling headliner would be Vic Mensa? Then you’re in luck! The Chicago rapper will grace us with his presence on May 11, along with garage rock band The Orwells and North Carolina hip-hop artist Rapsody. The show will open with a Wesleyan musical act, to be determined by the upcoming Battle of the Bands show.

In order to raise awareness about environmental issues on Wesleyan’s campus, and to make environmentalism more of a priority of the student body, Matilda Ostow, Lizzy Elliott and I have planned Radical Inhabitation. This action, which consists of a workshop and sleep-out, and culminates in a human banner, strives to connect environmental groups on campus and to expand dialogue about environmental issues. WesRave has arguably become Wesleyan’s most beloved, least controversial, wholly positive event. Have you ever heard someone seriously say, “YO, FUCK WESRAVE!?”
This year was the third WesRave, with a higher turnout, in my estimation, than the previous two (even though rain postponed this rave to Sunday before finals). Around 11 p.m., hundreds gathered on Foss (many with glowsticks) with an assortment of rave attire and pressed play at the same time. As the beat of “Cobrastyle” by Teddybears got going, so did the swaying of the crowd and the giggling and shrieks that could be heard above the music. A little over a minute in, the student shepherds started waving their gigantic racing flags to herd the crowd down Foss Hill and toward the CFA. Soon enough, our mass of silent ravers was running together, undoubtedly fueled by some alcohol and the exuberant crowd’s energy. This herding-running-dancing-more running-more dancing propelled the silent ravers from one campus location to the next, mapped out in the first hour as thusly: Foss–>CFA–>North College–>PAC–>Olin–>Usdan Courtyard–>PAC–>then I went to Late Night, what happened next?

Have you ever been to Wesleyan’s annual Take Back the Night Event? If you haven’t, you absolutely should. The event is organized by the group Students for Consent and Communication (SFCC), and this year’s event will be held on Thursday, April 24 at 7 pm on Foss Hill. I recently caught up with the Co-Presidents of SFCC, Caillin Puente ’15 and Nina Gurak ’16, to learn more about Take Back the Night. If you think that you have more important things to do at 7 pm on Thursday, hopefully this post will change your mind.
The co-presidents informed me that Take Back the Night (TBTN) is a global movement, as annual demonstrations are held in thirty countries worldwide. In fact, the event is organized by the Take Back the Night charitable foundation that was established in 1999. Puente described the organization’s mission in broad terms: “Take Back the Night is a global movement to end sexual violence. Also, it aims to stop the silence and eliminate the shame surrounding crimes of sexual assault and sexual violence. It’s been around since the 1970s.” In fact, the first Take Back the Night event was held in Philadelphia in 1975 after a female scientist was murdered while walking home alone. Puente stated that the event now occurs annually on college campuses, cities, and in other settings. “It’s about shedding some light on the subject and bringing communities together.”

Oh Foss Hill. You beacon of all the best non-class-related times at Wesleyan. I have been eagerly awaiting your repopulation. But waiting no more. Spring is finally coming/here, folks! I tested out the hill last Thursday afternoon and– though soggy– Foss and us have made it through that dastardly winter. Spring is here and so is a green Foss and I’m feeling nostalgic.
Foss Hill is THE institution around here.The most beloved. The most consistent. The actual center of student life. So, in celebration of Foss, here’s a post lauding favorite Foss Hill Times. AFTER THE JUMP.

Holi, the springtime Festival of Colors, returned to Foss on Saturday for the second year in a row, thanks to the efforts of Shakti, the South Asian Student Association. A barrage of colored powder combined with a slip-and-slide on Foss for the most festive display of spirit on Foss since, well, last Saturday. Are you MTR-aware? Zia Grossman-Vendrillo ’15 invites you to promote environmental justice:
Humans are intimately connected with the physical topography of the Earth, whether it’s Foss Hill or Appalachian hills and river valleys.
On the evening of Thursday, April 25th, Foss Hill will be alive with drums, banjos, guitars, voices, stones on stones, fire, and resounding cries for justice from Appalachia. We will use these media to raise awareness about environmental and social destruction in coalfield communities from the practice of Mountaintop Removal (MTR) mining, as well as the dedicated movement to resist these forces.
The Wesleyan MTR-awareness crew will be joined by:
-Guest speaker Colin Bennett from 350.org (350CT) and organizer of
Mountain Justice
–Morgan O’Kane, virtuoso banjo player, shouter and activist from
Virginia, now based in New York City, whose live performances are sure
