We’re Selling Stickers! So That We May Perpetuate Our Existence!

check out these ~sexy~ new sticker designs from our very own sdz (and our classic logo ones are back too)

Hey campus, how’s it going? Grinding tension of the academic experience just starting to build up? Same. Well, we have stickers to solve your problems. You might wonder, what purpose does a blog without a brand (okay, let’s be real, we definitely have a brand, and it is silly tweets and bad jokes) have for merch?

Well, first of all: we think these stickers are really, really cool and we like them a lot. That should be reason enough. But, unfortunately, it’s not.

We need money.

I know what you’re thinking. “Wesleying, I thought you were on our side in the struggle against the pressures of capitalism?” We are, but existing on the internet isn’t free. Our servers cost $25/month (up from $5 a month) and we have domain name expenses.

Wesleying has existed for 13 years (l’chayim!) as the only student publication at Wesleyan that has not received a single dime from the SBC. We are not a registered student group and don’t intend to become one. We think it insulates us quite uniquely from a lot of institutional pressures, so we can say whatever the fuck we want, pretty much (without being assholes).

We’ve been a platform for student voices and #snarky #commentary and breaking news and party locations and orgasm stories and Seniors talking about their theses and frosh learning about Wes. More generally, we have been a vehicle for idea transmission. People, for some reason or another, have viewed the site over 6 million times and submitted thousands of events to the site in the past 13 years.

But, our bank account is running low. #Classic #College #Student

So, we’re selling stickers! They’re very cool stickers! You should buy them!

There’s 3 sticker designs (pictured above), and we’re selling them for $3-5 each, or $10 for all 3! What a deal! You get to show off your blog/school/debaucherous spirit, and we get to stay online and posting about all things Wes! Or, if you’re just feeling generous, you can venmo us a donation @wesleying! Or use campus mail to send quarters (or dollar bills, or checks) to WesBox #90183! We’ll take anything we can get!

But WHERE CAN I GET THESE STICKERS?!?!?!?!? We’ll be posting on Twitter and Instagram when/where we are selling stickers! We’re a very personable blog, and we want to meet you, our dear readers/supporters! If you can’t seem to catch us around campus, you can DM us on any of our social media accounts, or shoot us an email at staff[at]wesleying[dot]org!

Thanks for supporting independent blogging here at Wesleying! #SBCFreeSince2006

Fundraising Week at the Star and Crescent

In the wake of the election, we at the S&C want to extend an invitation to anyone feeling scared, frustrated, or outright angry.  We have always endeavored to try and make the restaurant a safe, comfortable space that promotes dialogue and discussion over some tasty food.  But, it is more important now than ever to make a concerted effort to support the marginalized communities most affected by recent events.  Therefore, this week, we will be collecting donations for a different charity at every meal (of course, any and all contributions to these fundraisers are optional and left to your discretion). If you cannot make it to one of the week’s fundraisers, but would still like to contribute, we will post links to the sites where you can donate to the organizations directly.  We hope you will join us in breaking bread and spreading awareness about a few wonderful causes.

Descriptions of the organizations and their websites are listed at the bottom.

So, we’re selling stickers. We are going to be in Usdan TODAY, September 13th and TOMORROW, September 14th from 11:40-1:20PM selling these stickers on a sliding scale from $2-5. Come say hello! It will be a great time!

We’ll also be liveblogging here, because honestly it’s the first time some of us will have braved the Usdan lunch rush in a couple years, but especially because we want to be able to give shout outs to you, our lovely readers (provided you say nice and funny things). See you soon!

On the Record with President Michael Roth: Sexual Assault, Frats, Need Blind

maxresdefault

Beginning this semester, Wesleying will hold semi-regular meetings with President Michael Roth to ask all the questions about Wesleyan University that we have wanted, but never previously had the chance, to ask him. We have quite a bit of catching up to do. As Thursday, Nov. 20 was the first of these meetings, editors Samira, kitab, and Gabe, with input from Wesleying staff, used our time to ask a variety of questions about relevant issues from the past few years. As per their request, we informed the President’s Office beforehand on the general topics we wished to cover.

Our half-hour conversation, which we are posting here in its entirety, covers sexual assault procedure, coeducation of residential fraternities, fundraising, the endowment, need-blind admissions, and academic programs. This interview was edited for clarity.

#ThisisObama’sNow

obama-jogging

Prez Obama is running away with our #ThisIsWhy campaign.

What do you do when the leader of the free world hijacks your hashtag campaign? Barack Obama recently launched a new site featuring stories on why health care (reform) matters. The tagline’s Twitter-translation? #ThisisWhy.

It all began on January 1st, with Virginia.

Virginia may be able to go to the doctor again but does she have anything on James W. Thomasson ’63, an alum who gives us this story as part of Wesleyan’s #ThisIsWhy campaign?

At the age of eight, in socially divided Middleburg, Virginia, I was “reported” to my mother by a neighborhood “wag” for playing in the street with “John Henry”—yes, a ten-year-old black boy. As big a disgrace as that must have been for the neighbor, it paled in comparison to the embarrassment of my mother and the rage of my father.

Devotedly, Sincerely Yours: The Indiegogo Campaign

Sometimes, senior theses don’t just stop after #thesiscrazy ends. If they’re really something, and the person continues hir work after ze graduates, that thesis can become something even bigger. Samantha Joy Pearlman ’11 made that happenShe is promoting a new IndieGogo campaign for her thesis-show-turned-real-show Devotedly, Sincerely Yours: The Story of the USO, which she wrote and stars in.

The show is “a swingin’ big band celebration of the female performers of the United Service Organization (USO) Camp Shows during WWII,” and it needs funding to make its next big step into the world of theater. So far, the campaign raised $3,220 out of its reasonable $5,000 goal and there are 13 days left in the campaign. You can help out with this great project, and then go see what you helped create!
