2014: A Very Wesleying Year In Review

Guys, here’s the deal. We’re all feeling really old again because 2014 is over now, and that’s what happens each time you celebrate another year having come and gone. But before we can settle into 2015, which a previous year tried to warn us about (????), it’s time for your annual Wesleying Year in Review. Frosh writers astag_rocky, Caro, and Jackson put together the ten biggest moments on campus (#tbt style), links to relevant Wesleying posts that help you brush up on each of those topics, and lots of fun honorable mentions.

Some really weird, interesting, amazing, magical stuff happens at Wes, and this post serves to remind us to take those memories with us as we go forward. (Looking at you, “New Year, New Me” people.)

Now, a disclaimer: Not everything that happened this year is covered because even with help, frosh only get some of the things right some of the times. Feel free to leave your personal favorite/weirdest/coolest Wesleyan moments in the comment section. Also, note that the events that do get covered are not placed in any particular order of importance or severity.

Highlights from the Legendary ‘HIMYM’ Panel

Note: This article contains a couple of spoilers for people who haven’t yet seen HIMYM (or most notably, the series finale). And if you’re one of those people, you’re really missing out.

Carter Bays ’97 and Craig Thomas ’97, the co-creators, co-writers, and co-producers of How I Met Your Mother returned to campus on Saturday night. Their hit CBS sitcom ended last spring, with its finale garnering 12.9 million viewers (brag moment: that’s 2 million more than Breaking Bad’s finale). Scott Higgins, Chair of the College of Film and the Moving Image, asked them a range of questions before opening it up to a very excited audience. Here’s a roundup of the good stories and choice quotes from the night.

Barnett ’94 Premieres Show at Hartford Stage

Ken Barnett ’94, pictured above with co-star Lisa O’Hare, is starring in the new Robert Freedman musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. 

After premiering October 12, Barnett’s show received a glowing review from Charles Isherwood of the New York Times, who does not dole out praise easily.

Isherwood writes that Barnett, who majored in theater at Wes, “finds just the right blend of perky propriety and gimlet-eyed opportunism as the jolly killer at the center of the show.”

Thomas, Bays ’97 to give birth to new show

There are more appropriate pictures for this post. But there are none more legendary than this.

Jessica Jordan ’13, one of the two brave souls who spent freshmen year giving How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays ’97 and Craig Thomas ’97 attentions, sent in the following tip yesterday that might well titillate the knees of HIMYM fans:

Carter Bays just tweeted a couple of hours ago that Fox picked up a pilot by the HIMYM creators. When I interviewed Bays a couple of years ago he mentioned that they had just got done finishing up a pilot they wanted to pitch. I have no idea if this is the same one or not, but it’s awesome to know they’ll still be writing for TV in the coming years, especially since it is speculated that HIMYM will end May of 2013.

The show is called Goodwin Games, and it is said to revolve around three siblings who reconnect after the death of their father. Ugly Betty alum Becki Newton is set to be on board. Click here for source info.

I don’t know about you, but man – I am ready for HIMYM to wrap up. I remember watching and wishing for the mother since high school, dammit. HIGH SCHOOL. Do you know old that makes me feel? Curse you ThomBays. Curse your souls.

My Dinner With Michael: Roth Chills Hard With HIMYM’s Bays, Thomas ’97

During my freshman year, it took Argus writers Jessica Jordan ’13 and Jiovani Robles ’13 approximately eight months to score an interview with revered How I Met Your Mother co-creators Carter Bays ’97 and Craig Thomas ’97. We would know, too: they maintained a prolific diary–turned–Argus–column recording their desperate efforts to contact the duo. They dug up old yearbook photos and Ampersand pieces, invented imaginary awards, even wrote a one-act play based on their quest. (For more of Bays’ bizarre Ampersand material, check this apology to the Wesleyan community and editorial farewell.) When they finally published an interview, they were no longer freshmen.

Supreme leader Michael Roth ’78, on the other hand, seems to have gotten lucky on his first try.

Thomas, Bays ’97 Go All HIMYM On Our Asses

It’s hard enough getting an interview these days with Carter Bays ’97 and Craig Thomas ’97, creators of CBS’s How I Met Your Mother and powerful multibillionaires. For two Argus arts writers, it took the better part of freshman year.

But now Bays and Thomas want to talk. Specifically, they’ve managed to log onto to Wesleyan’s WesConnect alumni news board to spam their upcoming seventh season to point out some past Wes shout-outs (have you noticed? yeah?) and promise more. Here’s a clip of their message to the Wes community:

See, Carter and I based three of the main characters, Ted, Marshall and Lily (played by Josh Radnor, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan) on Carter, myself and Rebecca Alson-Milkman (class of ’98) and had them meet at Wesleyan, much like ourselves. Over six seasons, we’ve written in many a reference to our beloved alma mater (Have you caught them, Wesleyan? Really? Okay, pop quiz: name them all. I’m waiting… You know what, I don’t believe you, let’s just move on!)
