Creative Submissions for Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration

On Sunday, April 27th, the Wesleyan Jewish Community will be organizing a commemoration for Holocaust Remembrance Day. We are organizing an exhibit of writings, artwork, and other creative pieces; the exhibit will consist of both pre-existing works and works by students. The exhibit will be accompanied by a poetry reading on Sunday afternoon.

We need volunteers both to submit original works and to read pieces:

1) We are looking for student submissions of any form- music, writing, poetry, art, etc. Your work does not have to relate directly to this theme; feel free to submit anything that you feel might contribute to a commemoration of this kind.
2) We are also looking for volunteers to read pre-existing poems/short prose pieces on Sunday afternoon as part of our commemoration program.

Email ifattal[at]wesleyan[dot]edu with submissions, or let us know that you’re interested in reading a pre-existing piece. Feel free to email with any questions or suggestions for the event as well.

Domesticating the Holocaust: Our Twisted Love Affair with Bernhard Schlink’s The Reader

Professor Iris Bork-Goldfield writes in:

William Donahue, Professor of German and Professor of Literature as well as a member of the Center for Jewish Studies and the Center for European Studies at Duke University, will discuss new research on the reception of the Holocaust for a work in progress and for Holocaust Lite, the recently published German translation of his book Holocaust as Fiction: Bernhard Schlink’s “Nazi” Novels and Their FilmsHolocaust in Fiction is “the first scholarly study to probe the ‘Schlink phenomenon’ and to analyze its profound role in coming to terms with the Holocaust. Donahue dissects the seductive, transnational appeal of his work and the ways in which popular culture more generally has contributed to the success of Germany’s normalization campaign” (Todd Samuel Presner).
