Music Department Colloquium: “Voices of Afghanistan”

There’s a special opportunity today to hear from the musicians of “Voices of Afghanistan,” who are performing on Friday. From the CFA:

Ustad Farida Mahwash, “the Voice of Kabul,” will discuss her music and life as a female vocalist in Afghanistan. Rubab virtuoso Homayoun Sakhi and members of The Sakhi Ensemble will talk about the group’s instrumentation and performance practice.

Performance and Workshop by Contemporary Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar by Az Samad

Cheryl Tan ’11 sends this word of an event by The ADP Music Series (in conjunction with the Music Department)

This week, the ADP Music Series presents a performance and workshop by Az Samad.

Currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area, guitarist Az Samad has performed in festivals and venues in San Francisco, Boston, New York, West Virginia, Austria, United Kingdom, Singapore and Malaysia. Az has studied guitar with Eric Roche (UK), Thomas Leeb (Austria/LA), Don Ross (Canada), Mick Goodrick (Gary Burton Group), David Tronzo, John Stowell, Jimmy Wyble, Ben Monder (Maria Schneider Orchestra) and Bryan Baker (Steps Ahead). He has also participated in classical guitar master classes with Mark Teicholz and Muriel Anderson as well as taken private lessons with Steven Lin, Patrick Francis, Grisha Goryachev, Scott Tennant, Willliam Kanengiser, Gyan Riley and Ron Burczon. As an educator, Az has been a faculty member for the Berklee College of Music Summer Guitar Sessions since 2007 where he graduated Summa Cum Laude (dual major in Jazz Composition and Guitar Performance). Az is now working on his second solo album, a follow-up to the now rare out-of-print CD, “Acoustic Gestures.”

Introduction to Contemporary Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar by Az Samad

This workshop explores contemporary acoustic guitar techniques as used by artists such as Michael Hedges, Don Ross, Andy McKee, Alex De Grassi, Thomas Leeb and Eric Roche. Guitar percussion techniques, harmonics, two-handed tapping and alternate tunings will be discussed. Examples will include excerpts from the repertoire as well as from Az Samad’s original repertoire and arrangements
