In Depth: USLAC

uslacWelcome to another one of our In Depth features, where I’ll be covering USLAC. (By the way, in case you haven’t picked up on my blatant pro-USLAC bias yet, I’m a member of the club/out here ~*~scamming 4 full communism at Wes~*~, depending on who you ask. Either way, true.)

USLAC, or the United Student/Labor Action Coalition, has been around at Wesleyan for a while. However, until about halfway this semester, USLAC was on a brief hiatus. Old school USLAC did some super good work on campus, which you can read about here, and some students wanted to have the opportunity to make a difference on campus. So the new members, coordinated with former USLAC members to revive the club. They also took the opportunity to connect with a dope organization that hosts chapters of labor rights groups at schools nationwide, USAS, or United Students Against Sweatshops. So many acronyms! And whoa-what is USLAC anyway, right? Because I’m not nearly eloquent enough to describe the group’s mission myself, here’s a handy description I got from good ‘ole Orgsync:

U.S.L.A.C Meeting

JJ

From Leah Bakely ’16:

U.S.L.A.C, Wesleyan’s United Student Labor Action Coalition, wants you! We work with Wesleyan’s sub-contracted workers (the lovely people that clean your dorms and houses, Bon Appetit employees etc.) to, among other things, listen to and act on the concerns of these workers and raise awareness about their existence on our campus. Recently problems have arisen between Sun Services (the company that employs our janitors), the University, the janitors and their union primarily regarding their unreasonable workloads and their recent reorganization. If these problems seem concerning to you or if you’d just like to hang out with some really cool people in the U.O.C, come to our meetings!

Date: Fri, Sept 6
Time: 12-1 p.m.
Place: University Organizing Center (U.O.C) 190 High Street

First Student-Food Worker Coalition Meeting

Apologies to Becca Wilton ’15 for losing the color rainbow that used to be on the event description below. I guess if you want to see that, it’s a listserv exclusive:

CALLING ALL STUDENTS WHO SEEK A STRONGER STUDENT-WORKER COMMUNITY AT WESLEYAN

Frustrated with the way food employees are treated by students?
Want to get to know some of your favorite Usdan faces better but don’t know how?
Interested in trading recipes, food sustainability ideas, and chances to work with the Usdan chefs and food workers themselves?
Do you want to begin a dialogue and forge an alliance with the very people who make your food?
Then come to the first Student-Food Worker Coalition meeting! The SWC is a subgroup of WesFRESH dedicated to improving the relationship between students and food employees on campus, and to give each other knowledge, ideas, and support to enrich our community. We invite all Bon App employees to be there, so please ask all food service workers to join us!
Join us for our FIRST MEETING: WEDNESDAY APRIL 4TH! There are two different times3:30 PM in Usdan 110 and 6:30 PM in Usdan Multipurpose Room! The same things will be discussed at both meetings; the two different times are just to make sure that everyone who wants to go has a chance. This initial meeting is to get the dialogue going about the relationship students and workers have with each other and the issues involved in that relationship, how we can improve that relationship, and all other kinds of things about sustainability initiatives, food, and how much we love it!
We want as many people to come as possible, so tell your coworkers, your friends, staff, faculty, anyone you know!
SPREAD THE WORD. GET EXCITED. AND [WESLEYINGPOST] WIDELY.

Date: Wednesday, April 4th
Time: 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM
Place: Usdan 110 and Usdan Multipurpose Room, respectively
