Farm Forum aims to connect the Wesleyan community with the food we eat through education about sustainable agriculture.

Participants will learn growing practices through hands-on work on Long Lane Organic Farm, as well as gain a firm practical and theoretical grounding for further work in or involving agriculture. Topics in this semester’s forum include farm organization, the anatomy of plants, local Connecticut climate and geography, biodynamics, economic and social roles of farms on college campuses, food policy and justice, poultry husbandry, and permaculture. Look forward to getting dirty, fresh air, interesting discussions, wholesome food, and field trips!

If you are interested in taking Farm Forum this semester, or you just want to know more about this student forum, come to info session, where we will discuss the goals and logistics of the forum. Come with questions, snacks will be provided!

If you can’t make it to the info session but would still like to learn more about the forum please email us at hbrumberg[at]wesleyan[dot]edu and bwdaley[at]wesleyan[dot]edu.

Saturday Workday at Long Lane Farm

One time I ran into Ally Bernstein ’13 unexpectedly standing behind a farm stand at a yoga festival in Vermont. The girl likes to farm, and on Saturday morning, she wants you to join in the labor:

Long Lane Farm is one of Wesleyan’s most beautiful secrets, an organic student-run farm filled with growth and potential. There will be lots of opportunities to work on the farm this year, but Saturday mornings are the perfect time to enjoy the lovely autumn weather and play in the dirt.

We welcome everyone with any level of agricultural experience, and now is an especially exciting time to come out and lend a hand! The summer student farmers worked tirelessly and the farm is filled with ripening tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, kale, chard and more. We’re preparing for the first winter growing season in our brand new hoop house and providing produce for charities, the Middletown Farmer’s Market, and Bon Appetit (yes, there are Wesleyan-grown veggies in Usdan!). Students will be working from 10 AM to 2 PM, and we’ll be meeting at noon to discuss goals and ideas. Feel free to swing by any time.

Pumpkin Fest @ Long Lane

Ally freakin’ Bernstein ’13 hopes Saturday’s weather doesn’t look like this:

Come celebrate autumn, the harvest, and all things Halloween-y at Long Lane Farm, Wesleyan’s student-run organic vegetable farm! Feature the sweet sounds of Mattabesset Pickers Collective, the Apple Daughters, Jackie and Avery, and Tennessee Mowrey ’14 and his band! Bring money for the Farmers Market! Bring a canned good to be entered into a raffle to win an ION or Javapalooza gift certificate! Bring your bike so LEGIT bike co-op can fix it! Bring your face so we can paint it!

There will be free veggie burgers and crafts, farm tours and good vibes. Don’t miss it!

Note: if it rains (or snows) on Saturday, Pumpkin Fest will take place on Sunday, the 30th, at the same time. Check the Facebook page to see if it is postponed!

Date: Saturday, October 29
Time: noon – 4:00 PM
Place: Long Lane
Cost: no.
Facebook: yes.

Summer Update: WILDWes uproots WestCo Courtyard in search for elusive Smurf

Hey there Wes-folks!

So, while you’re out there in the big wide world fighting the famine in Somalia, getting down with the mountain goats in Baluchistan, playing with kids in inner-city Delaware, selling your booty out to corporate firms for a line in your resume, or just plain dancing on tables in Thailand to raise enough money for the flight back home (ah, sweet Spring Break ’09 memories), lots of interesting stuff has been happening back here at good ol’ Wes.

PAC’s getting a face-lift, for example. And a couple of professors have now spawned offspring.

Also, a renegade group of students calling themselves WILDWes have taken up arms and invaded the WestCo courtyard. Preliminary reports reveal that they have been actively ripping out the ground, frolicking about gleefully while shirtless, and generally committing acts that one would equate with the adjective “granola.” According to their website (clicky to visit), their primary goal is to “prove the viability of low-maintenance, low-input landscaping, and to demonstrate that this type of design is more sustainable, more attractive, and more socially accessible to all who work and live on campus” using the WestCo site as a maiden example.

Confused as to what this means, I sat down with one of these odd fellows, Katie McConnell ’13, to see what this whole business is about. Check out the interview after the jump. (Warning: Long ass post ahead!)
