A note about CSS, and how I chose my major

I got interested in the College of Social Studies (CSS) my freshman year because I was dating a CSS boy. As it turns out, the major was a much better choice than the boy.

Typically, if you are a freshman interested in History, Government, Economics, or Philosophy, CSS is a great multi-disciplinary way of combining all those things. For me, though, my academic interests weren’t necessarily in those areas. I just wanted to read a lot and write a lot and debate a lot about what we read and wrote, and CSS is a great way to do that too.
If you’re at all interested in becoming a part of this warm, supportive, and challenging community, please consider attending one of our weekly Monday lunches (Noon, Woodhead lounge, in Exley) or Friday social hours (4pm, CSS lounge, 4th floor PAC).

This week’s Monday lunch talk is on education and development in Rwanda, by Michael Brotchner, CSS ’95, Executive Director of Orphans of Rwanda. Again, that’s noon on Monday March 3, in the Woodhead Lounge.

More information on the CSS can be found here, and Applications are due March 28.

Major Open Houses, THE FUTURE AHH!

Last week, sophomores received fat envelopes full of OUR FUTURES. Don’t worry, you’re not alone in your acute FUTURE anxiety. If you shoved all those papers away somewhere so they wouldn’t keep mocking your lack of resolve about THE FUTURE, this is the post for you!

If you are flipping out about YOUR FUTURE, which is due on March 7th (three weeks away AHH!), each academic department has cared enough to try and chill you out a little by providing Open Houses this week and next where you can meet faculty members and current majors and learn more about your prospective major program while enjoying refreshments ranging from juice and cookies to full pizza lunches, depending probably on how stingy/well-funded your department of interest is (I kid, I kid, Art Studio, Anthropology, and others serving “light refreshments”).

Sophomores and interested freshmen are free to attend as many as you think you’re interested in, though you should probably be more interested in figuring out YOUR FUTURE than trying to eat free pizza for two weeks straight.

Seriously though, if you (sophomores) don’t have your shit together concerning your major yet, you should really do your homework over the next two weeks so you don’t have a total nervous breakdown when you actually need to deal with it later. Explore the Major Declaration Website for exhaustive information about the whole process, and the Major/Department Websites for specific information about whatever majors you’re considering.

You can handle YOUR FUTURE, just get on it.

Here is the full Open House Schedule. Sorry if the department you’re interested in has already had their Open House – we would’ve posted earlier but really, you should’ve been on top of it you slacker, you.
