On Friday afternoon, a cohort of Wesleyan activists drove down to New Haven’s financial district to protest three major banks’ investments in the Dakota Access Pipeline. Students from Wesleyan Democratic Socialists and Fossil Fuel Divest joined other protestors on the march, which began at Wells Fargo, moved to Bank of America and the Federal Courthouse, and ended at TD Bank. At each stop, organizers and indigenous activists made speeches and led chants demanding a halt to pipeline construction and that the banks divest from the project. Read past the jump for more information about the march and specific calls to action from the protest’s organizers.
There will be a Black Lives Matter March today, December 8th at 3 PM
starting at Exley Science Center.
Welp, good start to my Spring Break.
Like quite a few Wesleyan students, I was excited to escape the woes of Midterms and head back home— for me, Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. For the record, snow, you are not wanted past February. It is now March. You have overstayed your welcome. Stop messing with my spring.
Because of the sudden, angry downpour of upwards of a foot of snow, my flight has been sufficiently delayed by a few hours. So, lucky for you, I’m using this liveblog as a vehicle for my people-watching. Enjoy, and safe travels!
Want to spend the two-month anniversary of the Newtown shooting marching through Hartford with thousands of others to demand sensible gun legislation in Connecticut? So do I. There’s a planning meeting on Tuesday, and Em Kianka ’13 has deets:
The recent tragedy in Newtown has just made more apparent an issue that has been neglected for far too long. We as a community must take a stand and tell our legislators that enacting gun control legislation now is necessary to ending gun violence in the state of Connecticut. Come stand in solidarity with those working to end gun violence and join the March for Change in Hartford the morning of February 14th. The March for Change is organized by a coalition of activists supporting the enactment of safer gun legislation in CT and will support the efforts of CT Against Gun Violence.
Interested in marching or helping mobilize a coalition of Wesleyan students to attend or volunteer at the march? Come attend this planning meeting on Tuesday, 1/29 at 4:15 in Usdan 110 to talk about our vision for Wesleyan’s involvement in the march. THERE WILL BE SNACKS!
Also, please invite your friends!
Date: Tuesday, January 29 (the actual march is February 14)
Time: 4:15 p.m.
Place: Usdan 110
The sun is shining, it’s (relatively) warm outside, what a beautiful day for a protest, eh? The folks in the Community Banking Working Group of Occupy Wesleyan have put together a nice little march to our local BoA that’s meeting at the steps of Olin at 3 pm! Luckily, Middletown isn’t the biggest of cities, so I’m fairly certain you’ll be able to catch up with them as they make their way over. And hey, who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired enough to close out the millions sitting in your account.
- Friday April 27th, 3PM
- Leaving from the Steps of Olin
- March to BoA on Main St.
Tired of hearing about corporate banks taking advantage of American citizens? Frustrated by the fact that the only ATM on campus is owned by Bank of America? WELL, LET’S DO SOMETHING!
