Toneburst Laptop Ensemble – Live on WESU

The disembodied telepresence of Tobias Butler ’13 (aka tobobo from the hub) rises again:

This friday at 5 Eastern, a subset of Wesleyan’s Toneburst Laptop Ensemble will be taking over (some of) the airwaves on WESU 88.1 Middletown’s Wild Wild Live hosted by Mickey Capper and Rachie Weisberg. We will be using the very same computers most of us use to write essays and browse Facebook to create evocative, evolving musical works.

This will be no ordinary radio broadcast—a little over halfway through, you’ll be invited to visit http://t.obi.as/ using Google Chrome on your own computer to participate in a composition that will involve your personal machine as one voice in a potentially worldwide laptop choir. There will be a few guerrilla performances around the Wesleyan campus and in Middletown where many computers will be participating simultaneously—so grab your friends and laptops and go to a public place where you can sit and listen for a bit.

Meeting of the Radio Documentary Trolls

You can catch him at sound check. You can catch him on the radio every Friday. You can catch him in his Outside Lands hoodie. You cannot catch him shaving his beard. He is the omnipresent yet untraceable Mickey Capper ’13, and he has materialized long enough for me to record an important message that he brings to Wesleyan and the Middletown community:

We’re holding the first meeting of the radio storytelling group tomorrow (2/16) at 3pm in Studio B at WESU (above Red & Black). If you’re interested and can or can’t make it, send me an email at mcapper[at]wesleyan[dot]edu with a subject line that includes the word “troll.”

GOOD-LUCK-LUCKY-TROLL-DOLL2

The intention of the group is to support each other in creating audio stories, providing constructive criticism to each other, producing a quality “audio publication” at the end of the semester (on par with This American Life, Radiolab, or at least better than whatever other college kids are doing), and reclaiming the term “troll” from the evils of the Internet on behalf of the dope creatures that live under bridges.
Tomorrow we’ll be:
  • Listening to some short radio docs and discussing different techniques for interviews, narration, music, and sound design;
  • Discussing the materials available to record and edit stories, as well as sources for advice and information on what makes a good story.
What: Radio Documentary Explorers aka Doc Ex aka .docx
Where: WESU, 45 Broad Street (above Red & Black)
When: Saturday, February 16
Time: 3 – 4pm
Contact: mcapper[at]wesleyan[dot]edu with subject line “Troll”

WESU Show Seeks Budding Campus Live Acts

Radio is the internet of the future! Radio is the internet of the future! Critically acclaimed WESU board member Mickey Capper ’13 wants to know if you’ve been making music with the Fountain Backyard skunk:

Do you make music by yourself? Do you make music with your friends? Do you make music with the woodland animals of the Fountain backyards?

If so, WESU’s Wild Wild Live (Fridays 5:05-6 pm) wants you and your musical collaborators to come in and play LIVE on the RADIO (88.1 Middletown/wesufm.org for a live web stream). This will make you famous. Also, your performance will likely be available in podcast format. Interested artists should send a sample of material, an estimate for how much time they would like to play/interview for and a list of preferable Friday afternoons to play to MCApper(at)wesleyan(dot)edu.
