President Roth Calls for Affirmative Action for Conservative Ideas, Announces New Classes That Fit the Bill

“As someone who identifies with the political left, I welcome this intellectual diversity–and as a teacher, I know that education requires it. If you are on the right, you might call this a remedy for political correctness; if you are on the left, you might prefer to call it the ‘new intersectionality.'”

c/o the Wall Street Journal op-ed

In the haste of reading period and yesterday’s news, we missed big news from President Roth’s op-ed in the Wall Street Journal calling for affirmative action for “conservative, libertarian and religious modes of thinking” on college campuses. The op-ed generated quite the buzz on Twitter, and even received mild praise from notable conservative magazine the National ReviewRoth’s op-ed, entitled “The Opening of the Liberal Mind” was published in the Wall Street Journal behind a paywall last Thursday, May 11. Luckily, thanks to the Wesleyan Library’s databases, Wesleyan students have access to the op-ed.

First Meeting: Support Group for Families, Friends, and Significant Others of Military Personnel

Late last year, we posted about a new student group Alex Ketchum ’12 was seeking to start: a support group for family, friends, and significant others of military personnel. With help from Shannon Nelson ’14, that group is holding its meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) on the black couches in Usdan, right in the thrust of the Usdan dinnertime stampede hour special:

We are having our first meeting! This Wednesday at 6 PM on the black couches in Usdan!

Do you have friends, family, and/or significant others in the military and feel like you need a space to discuss your personal experiences? Are you looking for a supportive space to share your feelings and not feel isolated?

New Group: Support Group for Families, Friends, and Significant Others of Military Personnel

Alex Ketchum ’12 writes in about a new group (not the a Capella group) that hopes to serve as a space for family, friends, and significant others of military personnel:

Do you have friends, family, and/or significant others in the military and feel like you need a space to discuss your personal experiences? Are you looking for a supportive space to share your feelings and not feel isolated?

This group is not just for people connected to the U.S. military, but for friends, family, and lovers of military personnel around the world. While experiences from place to place may be different, many of the feelings of isolation, loss, and distance can create a commonality. Furthermore, this is not a political group. While it is very important to have spaces to discuss the politics, morals, and economics of the military, this is not that space. We are a support group, seeking to work together and help one another.

Daily Show: What is this, Wesleyan?

In last night’s Daily Show with John Stewart, after talking about how the United States infected Guatemalans with syphilis (USA! USA!), Jon and Senior Military Analyst Jason Jones talked about the army is reacting to fuel explosions.

Energy independence and environmental innovation.  Hardcore committed leftists.  Sound like Spicoli.  Allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Jones thought the same thing you did:

“I mean come on, is this the United States army or Wesleyan?!  The next thing you know they’ll have socialized medicine.”

Watch the clip “Green the Army Now” at around 5:45 to hear the shout-out.  It’s just as great as being singled out by Andrew Breitbart at the Tea Party convention last year.
