Now that we’ve had a few days to form a retrospect and reach a few conclusions, what exactly will be the legacy of this year’s Eclectic Sex Party?

With the exception of a few people who hit the sweet spot during their pregame and/or managed to have fun busting a move, the night was slightly below average by Wesleyan’s high standards.

Inside, adjectives used to describe the atmosphere would include, hot, sweaty, bright, fleshy, loud-in-a-bad-way, and decidedly unsexy.

Outside things were a little bit worse. The vast majority of partygoers were initially faced with a long, jumbled line, and an increasingly belligerent P-Safe and Middletown Police. The policy of the party security was highly reactionary, determined to be more prepared than last year for some sort of drunken, horny, teenage riot. When the security refused to open the doors to the party (and eventually shut it down), a drunken, horny, teenage riot was nearly what they got.

So what are going to become the lasting impressions of the night? Judging from the bitching on the ACB and other anecdotal evidence, neither the members of Eclectic, the security officers, nor the attendees will be remembered in a particularly positive light. Is this type of party really worth repeating next year? It is, unfortunately, more than likely that hordes of people, primarily underclassmen, will queue up again to get tickets and reconstruct their expectations. But precedent proves those expectations to be naive.

Throughout the whole night, the people I met who seemed to be enjoying themselves most were a group of seniors who hosted a more private affair, safe in the knowledge that this year’s Sex Party will be just like last year’s Sex Party, but a little bit worse.

PS. Those people who imbibed in excess made exceptionally pitiful attempts to reach the bathroom this weekend. On behalf of Wesleying, the maintenance staff, Michael S. Roth, and your fellow peers, please stumble another twenty feet.

Two Middletown Police cruisers, including a K-9 unit vehicle, are double-parked near the Lawn Avenue side of Brainard Avenue, a street housing undergraduates, grad students, and Middletown residents. As of 1:30 PM, two police officers could be seen leading a police dog down Ravine Avenue, towards the corner of Home and Beach.

No word at this time on the cause of the police presence; but, from what I can tell, it does not appear to be any kind of emergency.

[EDIT 4:58 PM] The police presence was likely related to a string of attempted burglaries around the area of High Street, Home Avenue, and Brainard Avenue.

Maureen Isleib of ResLife writes:

We had several attempted burglaries in wood-frame houses today between noon and 1:00 PM. The suspect, an African-American male, 5’8′ with slim build, wearing black jeans and shirt with a black bandana on his head, possibly carrying a book bag, would knock on the front door of the house and, if no one answered, try to force entry at the rear of the house.

If you notice suspicious individuals or activity around campus, contact Public Safety at 860 685-2345.

Members of Food Not Bombs, who prepare vegetarian meals for the Middletown community using food that would otherwise have gone to waste, were approached by Health Department Sanitarian Manfred Rehm and three officers of the Middletown Police Department at their weekly meal yesterday. An officer cited Michelle Markowitz ’10 and Middletown resident Fred Carroll for serving food to the public without a permit, issuing them fines of at least $100.

According to Blargus writer and Food Not Bombs member Jonathon Booth ’12, the group has taken steps to comply with local health regulations and plans to continue their 12-year old tradition of serving food at the corner of Main Street and Liberty Street, Sundays at 12:45 PM.

The Middletown Police Department’s report on the Fountain incident has been released. An MPD press release announcing the completion of the department’s investigation notes that it concluded that “the officers were faced with what they described as a large, unruly and hostile crowd,” and, as a result, “the officer’s [sic] use of force was ‘objectively reasonable’…to effect these arrests, to prevent injury to themselves and others, and to prevent escape.”

It also notes that the improvement of communication and development of a better relationship between Wesleyan and MPD is key to ensuring that this does not happen again. The full report is 66 pages long and contains a thorough summary of the night’s events, the arrests, the call for assistance, and the written complaints.
