The Best Write-In Votes of the WSA Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections

Someone actually voted for Lil B this year, so I don’t feel bad using this image again.

Our long, national nightmare is over. Following an interview by schmox that rivals the University’s Reaccreditation Self-Study for length, the results of the WSA elections are in: Nicole Updegrove ’14 and Andrew Trexler ’14 will be taking seat as president and vice-president, respectively. (For anyone keeping score at home, this makes Updegrove the first female president of the WSA since Emily Polak ’05 served during the 2004-2005 academic year.) Write-in champion Giant Joint made an especially meager showing this year, receiving only 25 votes for president and 29 votes for vice-president (unless you count those three votes for “big blunt”) after a briefly resurrected social media presence:

Liveblog: WSA Presidential Debate

Greetings from Usdan. The esteemed BZOD and I are awaiting the start of the annual WSA Presidential Debate, featuring presidential candidates Mari Jarris ’14, Nicole Updegrove ’14, and Keith Conway ’16 (each of whom you’ll get to know more when we publish a group interview with the candidates in a few days). As I write this, BZOD is shamelessly fraternizing with the candidates, who are all smiling in a most political manner. We’re hoping to continue a tradition started by the great frostedmoose several years ago, though we can’t expect to match his poetic fervor or unparalleled wit. We can only hope he’s following along somewhere shaking his head furiously and deliriously throwing cat memes at a wall.

Apparently this debate is livestreaming somewhere, but I don’t have time to find the link because it’s about to start. If you care enough to livestream it, you’re probably here in Usdan anyway.

Call for International Student Stories

Nicole Updegrove ’14 sends out a call to international students:

Wesleyan 2020 names having a “more international” student body as a major institutional priority for the decade. However, international students attending Wesleyan face regularly a number of challenges that domestic students don’t always encounter, like international travel, visa bureaucracies, tax difficulties, employment bureaucracies, lack of American driver’s licenses, and difficulty returning home for holidays, among many others. I have recently heard reports that services for international students aren’t always what they ought to be.

If you are an international student with stories to tell, please contact nupdegrove(at)wesleyan(dot)edu with input about your experience with international student orientation, various policies, the international student office, and ideas about how WSA’s Student Affairs Committee can improve your experience and that of incoming international student classes.

Point/Counterpoint: Should Tobacco Sales Be Banned on University Property?

“The document is about aligning the commercial decisions of the University with the values it espouses.”

Well, should they? That’s the subject of a WSA General Assembly meeting tonight in Usdan 108, where President Roth ’78 will make a not-so-surprise appearance and is willing “to talk about anything you want.” (Including Hegel.) (And Freud.) The meeting is at 7 p.m., and maybe I’ll see you there, because it just occurred to me I’ve never been to a WSA meeting before in my life.

According to the Argus, the WSA’s Student Affairs Committee recently proposed to ban the sale of tobacco products on all University-owned properties, a category that most notably includes popular cigarette supplier Neon Deli. In fact it was committee chair Nicole Updegrove ’14, not the committee itself, who proposed the resolution (update: The Argus has amended their article to reflect this distinction), and in a brief email interview with Wesleying, Updegrove defends her controversial resolution against opponents.

Have opinions of your own about the resolution? Good. Consider going to the meeting tonight, where the Assembly will be asembling in a most assembly-like fashion. We’ll highlight a counterpoint from a student against the proposal later today. Here’s our interview with Updegrove:
