The High Mountain Institute comes to Wes!

Just a post to let you know that the High Mountain Institute will be at Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 17th at 5:30pm in Usdan to show a slide show about the Apprentice Program. The HMI Apprentice Program is a professional residency in traditional and outdoor education for college graduates.

For more information check out their website here.  Applications are due for both semesters on March 1, 2011.

Here’s a blurb provided by Carrie Mallozzi, HMI’s Apprentice Program Coordinator:

At the High Mountain Institute, we believe deeply in the philosophy of education through experience. Apprentices will be immersed in an intense, semester-long seminar that combines formal lessons in educational techniques and philosophies of outdoor education, with a hands-on apprenticeship with the HMI Semester. Specifically, apprentices will participate, as both students and teachers, in the wilderness, academic, and residential components of the HMI Semester.

That’s right – it’s that time again! Come hang out with fellow outdoorsy folks and discuss outings for the next two weekends as well as ideas for fall break. Meet at Outhouse (132 High Street) at 10 PM on Wednesday. If you are interested, come early at 9 PM to hear professor Peter Mark talk about his mountain climbing exploits in the Alps.

Mountain Climbing in the Alps – a Talk by Peter Mark

Mega into mountain climbing? Fan of flabbergasting nature photos? Ardent about the Alps? Curiosity piqued by peaks? Come hear professor Peter Mark talk about his many mountaineering adventures in the European Alps while viewing a slideshow of undoubtedly epic pictures. Wednesday, September 29th, 9 PM, at Outhouse, 132 High Street.

P.S. This would also not be a bad way to fill that hour of unbearable anticipation we all suffer through before the biweekly outing club meeting (this Wednesday at 1o PM).

  • Time: 9 PM
  • Place: Outhouse, 132 High Street

Weekend outings!

All outings will meet at Outhouse (132 High Street, the one with the yellow crescent moon on a red door). So without further ado:

Night Hike at Wadsworth (for real this time!) – Thursday (today), 8:30 PM

This Thursday is the Harvest Moon!  That means it’s a perfect time for a night hike to Wadsworth.  Get excited to see the falls in the moonlight.  Headlamps will be provided (hopefully we won’t need them!).  Email ehealey@wes, and let her know if you can bring a car.

Night Ride – Thursday (today), 10:30 PM

Come out for a short night ride around campus, length and route depends on interest and size of group. All bikes and abilities welcome.  Blinky, reflectors, or headlight required, helmet strongly recommended. Contact rstamp@wes with questions.

Alpine Start, Mt Higby – Friday, 5:30 AM

Start off your weekend right by venturing up nearby Mt. Higby to watch the sun rise. At the tippy-top, we will revel in the new day and then descend, perhaps taking upon ourselves the mission of consuming a glorious diner breakfast. (Bring money just in case). Don’t worry, we’ll be back in plenty of time for 9 o’clock classes. Email afersch@wes if you are interested and if you have a car.

Cruizin’ on the Connecticut – Saturday, 1:00 PM

Work off that hangover/take a study break with a leisurely “out and back” ride ~9 miles by the Connecticut River.  All bikes and abilities welcome.  Helmet strongly recommended. Contact rstamp@wes with questions.

Hilly Road Ride – Sunday, 1:00 PM

~30 mile scenic road ride through Lyman Orchards, Whirlwind Hill, and past Wallingford Resevoir.  Road bikes only.  Average speed 15-18mph, helmet and water required, patch kit/repair kit strongly recommended. Again, contact rstamp@wes with questions.

That’s all for now. And remember – if you have a cool idea for an outing, let us know! You can lead it yourself, but we’re also more than willing to help!

Wesleyan Climbing Club Meeting

Looking for rock climbing opportunities around Wes? Never been climbing before but really want to give it a try? Come on down to Outhouse (132 High Street) Sunday night at 8PM and get to know your fellow climbers at the first Wesleyan Climbing Club Meeting of the year!

Date: Today, Sept. 19
Time: 8 PM
Place: Outhouse

First Outing Club Meeting!

Do you like hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, climbing, camping, apple-picking, cliff-jumping, kayaking, or anything else that has to do with the outdoors?

If the answer is yes, then check out the Outing Club. All year long the Outing Club hosts hikes, camping trips, canoe trips, and other excursions to the great outdoors! We also rent outdoor gear to students at a very low price.

The first meeting will be Wednesday the 16th at 10:00 at Out House (132 High Street).  It won’t be so much a meeting as an ice-cream fueled meet-and-greet,  so be ready to talk to some really chill people while eating some delicious ice-cream.

Date: Wednesday, September 16th
Time: 10 pm
Place: Out House (132 High Street)
