Happy Birthday, Michael S. Roth ’78!

In celebrating President Roth’s birthday, we are sharing a timeline of his illustrious life.

Springtime is in the air and Foss Hill is alive with cheer on this glorious April day, a day full of historic occasions, none of them so grandiose as the 56th birthday of everyone’s favorite part-time university administrator and full-time historian of the history of psychological thought, Michael S. Roth ’78. While Wesleying is not privy to the full week of gala celebrations probably kicking off tonight with a Freud-themed costume party at the presidential residence, we do want to share in the cheer by looking back on President Roth’s illustrious life and career. Courtesy of Wesleyan Ampersand historians Piers Gelly ’13 and Benjamin Soloway ’13, here is a rough timeline of Michael S. Roth, interspersed with visual tributes that some of our readers and fans have sent in. (Some of the images are also via The Ampersand.) We have also changed our banner for the occasion.

Want to wish President Roth a happy birthday yourself? You can do so on Facebook, where he is, like, 92% guaranteed to accept your friend request. You can also do him the favor of fixing a “Citation needed!” alert for his date of birth on Wikipedia, which bans citing Facebook in articles. You can also follow him on Twitter or hit up his blog or read this Bomb Magazine interview or watch a video of him hanging out with Judith Butler.

Quasimodal Final Concert

Julia Michaels ’12 is better at Photoshop than I am:

We’re baaaaaaaaaaaack! We’ve been keepin’ ourselves on the DL because what we have planned for you is just. too. good. Mmmmmm.

After a super hectic semester with NO SNOW WTF and lots and lots of FUN, Quasimodal (Wes’s oldest co-ed a cappella group) is BACK and BETTER THAN EVER. And what better way to celebrate a spring revival than a SPRING CONCERT in da historic Memorial Chapel!?!?!?!??!??!?!

Take a quick 1-hour study break on Monday night (obvi you won’t bring your laptops, so just think of it as a much more productive, cultured version of SelfControl) and come join us for an evening of merriment and mirth. We will be singing, dancing, rapping, clapping, stomping, introducing one of our newbies (!) and saying goodbye to two absolutely incredible seniors.

Date: Monday, May 14
Time: 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Place: Memorial Chapel
Cost: Free

Happy Birthday, President Roth!

It’s been a busy weekend for Wesleyan (armed robberies, stressed thesis-writers, and police dogs, oh my), but we didn’t forget: it’s April 8. On behalf of Wesleying, I’m thrilled to wish a very happy birthday to everyone’s favorite university administrator and WesCeleb extraordinaire, Michael S. Roth ’78. You’re 55! You don’t look a day past 47! Go nuts!

Of course, the birthday boy has been celebrating in typical nonstop Roth fashion: by penning yet another Huffington Post column, this one focusing on the issues accepted students must contend with as they spend this month deciding where to matriculate. “Size, of course, matters,” the president wryly admits. But, just as important, “I find myself suggesting that they get a feel for the student culture of the schools in which they are interested.” The president, who has apparently taken a liken to Wesleyan’s recent USA Today fame, goes on to rave about the “vibrant music and film contexts that seem to fuel independent rock and hip-hop on the one hand, and popular film and TV on the other.”
