WeSLAM Poetry Workshop

From WeSLAM:

Always wanted to slam but haven’t “gotten around to it” yet? Have lots of poems but no idea how to perform them? Want some feedback on work you have written?

Come to the WeSLAM Poetry Workshop! This Saturday the 15th! 4:30pm! Usdan 110!

The 2nd Preliminary Slam is just around the corner on Thursday, October 20th. This workshop is open to anyone, whether you’re planning to slam or not, but we would definitely encourage anyone who is planning to spit at the prelims to come through. We can focus on both writing and performance (and we may even have some guest workshop-ers coming in to help out). Newcomers welcome (this is a great way to start out), as well as slam veterans. Brings poems and your beautiful selves.

  • WHEN?: Tomorrow (Saturday), October 15th @ 4:30 pm
  • WHERE?: Usdan 110.

WeSLAM Presents: 1st Preliminary Slam (feat. Safia Elhillo)

From WeSLAM:

WeSLAM hit the ground running this year with our first ever slam showcase. (Missed it or want to re-live it? Check this awesome vid, courtesy of Reid Hildebrand ’14.) But now, it’s time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for…

THE FIRST PRELIMINARY SLAM OF FALL 2011!

12 poets. 2 rounds. Who will take the first four spots in the 1st Semester Grand Slam? Come watch these poets battle with beautiful words TOMORROW in Fayerweather 106. You’re not going to want to miss this. And we don’t want you to either.

But that’s not all. For the first slam of the semester, it’s go big or go home. So to feature for y’all, we are bringing in Safia Elhillo, currently ranked 7th in the Women of the World Poetry Slam. Warning: Safia will spit hot fire. She will throw punches. Bring a friend; you’ll need hir hand to squeeze real tight. Check her out here.

WeSLAM Workshop!

Dear Poet ’12 / ’13 / ’14 / ’15:

Tomorrow (Saturday), from 1:30-3:30, on the top floor of Allbritton (same spot as last Sunday’s general interest meeting), we will be hosting a Slam Workshop!!!

What’s a Slam Workshop? Thanks for asking! The slam workshop will be an open forum for you to bring in any work you’ve got, polished or unpolished, that you’re considering using in a slam setting. A lot of it will be guided by what you, the people, are interested in doing, but on the big picture level we’ll be messing around with both the writing and performance of your poems, working to take them to that next level, and bring out all the dope-ass-awesomeness that might be hiding just below the surface. More after the jump!

WeSLAM Poetry Showcase!

From Emily Weitzman ’14:

That’s right. We’re back. WeSLAM is kicking off its second year at Wes with a showcase on the steps outside of Allbritton this Friday night (don’t worry, only from 8 to 9–still plenty of time to get on with your Friday night). Come watch dope poets spit sexy poetry, and find out what WeSLAM is all about. Whether you went to every slam last year, are interested in getting involved, or have no idea what slam is–we want y’all there.

NOTE: This is a showcase. NOT a “slam.” The difference is that there will be no scores at this event. No judges. No bullshit. Only words. And feelings. Come feel with us.

Invite everyone you know (especially freshman)! If you can’t make the showcase but want to get involved with WeSLAM, come to our general interest meeting on Sunday (9/18) at 2:30 in Usdan 110.

  • WHAT?: WeSLAM Poetry Showcase
  • WHEN?: Friday (TOMORROW), 9/16 @ 8-9pm
  • WHERE?: Outside of Allbritton

weSLAM Sees Massive Success at CUPSI

Emily Weitzman ’14 and Randyl Wilkerson ’12 performing “Eyes,” which won Best Persona Poem.

Emily Weitzman ’14, a member of the Wesleyan Slam Poetry Team, writes:

Spending a week in Michigan surrounded only by poets and poetry may have been the furthest from reality I have been in a while. But at the same time, I experienced more emotions in a short period of time than I ever thought possible. One poem would punch you in the face, the next would gently hold your hand, then you would be hiding under your chair in fear, and finally, you were crying from hearing a line that let you feel something you never knew you could. I have never felt more strongly that a poem can change your life.

Between April 6th and April 9th, weSLAM competed against 36 other teams in the College Unions Poetry Slams Invitational, the national spoken word competition at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. weSLAM advanced to the semi-finals and snagged both the Spirit Award and the award for Best Persona Poem, ultimately becoming the 7th-highest-ranked poetry team in the land of the free and the brave. But this is not what’s important here.

weSLAM Takes 1st @ WLPSI, Breaks Tie

Our immediate slamily, along with their coach, Morgan Hill ’14 (second from left).

(Not pictured: Randyl Wilkerson ’12, desperately missed at this moment.)

Wesleyan has taken 1st place at the Wade-Lewis Poetry Slam Invitational at SUNY New Paltz.  An account follows.

The first night of WLPSI (Friday, March 5th) saw Wesleyan competing against NYU and UMinn-Macalester, and the finals (Saturday, March 6th) saw Wes competing against Brown, SUNY Oneonta, and UMinn-Macalester.

But on Saturday night, there was a tie between the final two teams.  Just as shocking?  One of the teams, University of Minnesota, is a veteran, well established in the slam world since its inception, while the other, Wesleyan, is a bouncing baby ze, having only started this year.

weSLAM & AASC Present: Spring Slam Series, Round Two (+ Open Mic!)

“The Hegemonic Order” group piece @ SUNY New Paltz Regionals

Prayers have been answered!  The Wesleyan poetry slam is coming to Church tomorrow night!

From the Facebook event page:

The AASC (Asian American Student Collective) & weSLAM bring you round TWO of the Spring Slam Series. Join us WEDNESDAY at 200 CHURCH for a suggested donation of $1.

12 poets. 2 rounds.
Which 3 will advance to the SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN?
Only time (and poetry!) will tell.

Come spit. Come listen. Come feel things with us.

This is your 2nd of 3 chances to make it to the Championship Slam in April.

And no, “come spit” does not mean you are free to literally eject saliva from your mouth while in 200 Church, silly.
