Come to the Shapiro Center on Monday, April 18th, for a reading of Saïd Sayrafiezadeh’s works. Mr. Sayrafiezadeh’s writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and McSweeney’s, among other publications. He has also been the recipient of the Whiting’s Writer Award for Nonfiction and a Cullman Center fiction fellowship.
Not only is Mr. Sayrafiezadeh an award winning writer – a small group of Masters Class students also had the privilege of working with him this semester.

Apply to be the Spring 2016 Junior Fellow for the Shapiro Center for Creative Writing! This paid position is a wonderful opportunity to work closely with Writer-in-Residence Amy Bloom, collaborate with the Senior Fellow to plan Shapiro Center events, and continually reach out to Wesleyan’s vibrant writing community.
We are seeking an applicant that is adaptable, a self-starter, responsible, and in possession of a sense of humor (hilarity, while appreciated, is not required). A car as well as a mild interest in reading and writing are a huge plus. If interested, please shoot an email to Sofi Goode expressing your interest. Award-winning writer and President Obama’s inaugural poet, Richard Blanco is also a public speaker, author, and civil engineer. Blanco’s work has appeared in numerous poetry collections, including the Best American Poetry series, and he was the 2006 recipient of the PEN Open Book Award for his publication “Directions to the Beach of the Dead.” Blanco was the first immigrant, the first Latino, the first openly gay person, and the youngest person to be the U.S. inaugural poet.

Award-winning poet Richard Blanco is coming to Wesleyan this semester for an exclusive masters class! Blanco’s works have focused on his heritage and identity as well as the impact of national tragedy. This series includes three 2.5 hour workshop-style classes with the inaugural poet, and one dinner after class.
The class is open to anyone who can commit to all three classes (September 23, October 28, and November 18). The course is not for credit, and has no additional cost. To apply, send a cover letter and sample of 3-4 poems to abloom[at]wesleyan[dot]edu. All applications must be submitted by SEPTEMBER 15, but the sooner the better! Take advantage of this chance to work closely with a professional poet.
