WesBAM! Kids Yoga Teacher Training

Interested in teaching yoga to kids?

The WESBAM! JR KIDS YOGA TEACHER TRAINING is an incredibly fun, cOMmunal, accessible, and educational experience!

Training addresses teaching yoga to children in pre-school and elementary school. Whether you are seeking to incorporate what you learn into your current work with children or would like to apply to be a kids yoga teacher at Green Street, the WesBAM! Jr. Teacher Training will provide you with the information, tools, and inspiration necessary to begin doing so ASAP. The skills you will learn in this training will be highly relevant and valuable for a variety of settings you will find yourself in from here on out. This training will allow you to bring a holistic and embodied perspective to educational and recreational volunteer work/jobs now and in the future. NO TEACHING OR YOGA EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

Shira Engel’s Yoga U

Yoga U

This past fall, Shira Engel ’14, Wesleyan’s own sage yogi extraordinaire, self-published an e-book on yoga for college students called Yoga U: The College Student’s Tools for Balanced Living. Julia Drachman ’14 drew the book’s illustrations. From a recent press release about the book: 

Yoga U was written and illustrated to be as user-friendly as possible. With 100-plus yoga poses, diagrams, instruction, and translation, full yoga sequences for personal practice created and contributed by celebrity teachers, embedded links to external resources, as well as clear and effective instruction for breathing exercise, Yoga U is a manual for optimal use of body and mind. The e-book also places an emphasis on yoga philosophy, including interpretations of the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, and Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga broken down in a fun and playful lexicon familiar to college students. The e-book connects students to college yoga across the country with interviews with college yoga teachers and a resource guide at the end.

DIY Yoga with Shira Engel

After a long week of studying, what I need more than anything is to work on my pratyahara. Luckily, Em Trambert ’14 is looking out for me:

Love yoga but…
None of the classes fit into your schedule? You want to practice more frequently, but don’t want to shell out money on a daily basis? You want to learn more about the postures?

Well, you’re in luck! This Saturday, Shira will be teaching a free yoga class focused on how to create your own home practice. This will still be a physically vigorous class, but it will incorporate tips on how to do it yourself (or DIY, as some whippersnappers would say). Plus, it’s at 4PM, meaning you will have plenty of time to digest brunch before getting your yoga on!

Yoga mats will be provided for those who need. However, if you have your own, please bring it!

TGIF Yoga Dance Party

Remember TGIF on the WB? This is like that but with yoga. From Shira Engel ’14:

It’s a yoga dance party, speakers blasting Top 40s, and perhaps live music at the end. There will be food and coconut water/kombucha on tap. This late-night festival is  an opportunity for the Wesleyan community to engage with what WesBAM! has to offer in a free, completely informal, fun, and dancing context. Photo courtesy of this awesome NY Times article on yoga dance parties (it’s a thing, people!).

Introducing WesBAM! (Fitness Instructors Needed)

Yogi extraordinaire Shira Engel ’14 writes in to announce that Wexercise is back this fall as WesBAM! (Wesleyan Body and Mind!). The new group aims to be more accessible, include more students, and cut the prices of classes in half:
WesBAM! is a student-run organization that makes mind-body awareness and fitness accessible at Wesleyan through offering classes in a wide variety of practices – yoga, kickboxing, spin, Zumba, and more. We believe these practices should be accessible to everyBODY and are committed to helping students incorporate them into the college lifestyle. While strengthening our bodies as we nurture our minds, we aim to create a community of fun and respect for both our bodies and each other.

Yoga Class – 10 AM TODAY!

Come take a yoga class with Shira Engel ’14! The class will use dynamic movement and vinyasa flow with breath to get your Sunday before classes start off to an energizing start! Shira trained with Three Sisters Yoga and teaches a vinyasa that moves students through the energetic centers of the body. Find out more at her blog!
