WeSLAM Presents: The 24-Hour Group Slam (feat. The Good News Poetry Tour)

Oh Boy:

Have I a treat for you!

Come on out to the first poetry slam of the semester tonight! Two-person poems will be written, edited, and rehearsed in the 24 hours before the slam. These pieces will be raw, fresh, and/or tasty, so you will not want to miss out on the feast. Who will win? (It doesn’t matter.) Come out and see!

There will be an open mic before the slam, during which all acts are welcome. Come up and do your crazy act with the monkey if it strikes your fancy so.

And The Good News Poetry Tour will be featuring! Check out a poem from one of them here.

  • DATE?: Today (Sat., February 23)
  • TIME?: 7:30pm
  • PLACE?: WestCo Café
  • FACEBOOK?: Here.
  • PANDA?: Panda.

More about the illustriously Good News Poetry Tour after the jump, for proof of their brilliance.

Interested in a 24-Hour Group Poetry Slam?

WeSLAM, Wesleyan’s premiere spoken-word organization, wants to know if you would be interested in participating a 24-hour group slam. Basically what this means is that you would be paired up with a fellow poet on a Friday night, you would brainstorm ideas for a group piece (examples: 1, 2, and 3), and then you would wake up early Saturday morning and get writing. On Saturday night, you would compete against other group poems for a chance at first place.

If this sounds remotely fun to you at all, then please email Coz Deicke ’15 at cdeicke(at)wesleyan(dot)edu.

WeSLAM Presents: 2nd Preliminary Slam (feat. SciryL)

But that’s not all. We are bringing in SCIRYL to feature. SciryL (“lyrics” spelled backwards) is a poet, rapper, singer, and overall lyrical genius. He has even been a poet on HBO’s Def Jam Poetry. Check him out here and here.

  • TIME: signups @ 7:45pm, open mic @ 8pm, slam @ 8:15pm

From WeSLAM:

WeSLAM hit the ground running this year with our first ever slam showcase. (Missed it or want to re-live it? Check this awesome vid, courtesy of Reid Hildebrand ’14.) But now, it’s time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for…

WeSLAM Workshop!

Dear Poet ’12 / ’13 / ’14 / ’15:

Tomorrow (Saturday), from 1:30-3:30, on the top floor of Allbritton (same spot as last Sunday’s general interest meeting), we will be hosting a Slam Workshop!!!

What’s a Slam Workshop? Thanks for asking! The slam workshop will be an open forum for you to bring in any work you’ve got, polished or unpolished, that you’re considering using in a slam setting. A lot of it will be guided by what you, the people, are interested in doing, but on the big picture level we’ll be messing around with both the writing and performance of your poems, working to take them to that next level, and bring out all the dope-ass-awesomeness that might be hiding just below the surface. More after the jump!

WeSLAM General Interest Meeting!

From WeSLAM:

Tomorrow, Sunday, at 2:30 PM in the Top Floor of Allbritton (room 311, the one with the balcony), we will be hosting a general interest meeting. This is for anyone–and we mean anyone–who is interested in some capacity or another in participating in the WeSLAM community. Are you itching to spit at the slams? Come to the meeting! Do you wanna be a part of the organizational body of WeSLAM? Come to the meeting! Are just down to watch some poems? Come to the meeting! We’ll give you a rundown on the way the group works, as well as what’s gonna be going on slam-wise for the coming semester.

Can’t make the meeting? No worries. Shoot us an email at weslam.wesleyan(at)gmail(dot)com to let us know, and we can fill you in on what you missed.

  • WHERE?: Allbritton 311
  • WHEN?: TOMORROW (Sun., 9/18) @ 2:30 pm
  • SPECIAL MATERIALS REQUIRED: Artistic wanderlust.

WeSLAM Poetry Showcase!

From Emily Weitzman ’14:

That’s right. We’re back. WeSLAM is kicking off its second year at Wes with a showcase on the steps outside of Allbritton this Friday night (don’t worry, only from 8 to 9–still plenty of time to get on with your Friday night). Come watch dope poets spit sexy poetry, and find out what WeSLAM is all about. Whether you went to every slam last year, are interested in getting involved, or have no idea what slam is–we want y’all there.

NOTE: This is a showcase. NOT a “slam.” The difference is that there will be no scores at this event. No judges. No bullshit. Only words. And feelings. Come feel with us.

Invite everyone you know (especially freshman)! If you can’t make the showcase but want to get involved with WeSLAM, come to our general interest meeting on Sunday (9/18) at 2:30 in Usdan 110.

  • WHAT?: WeSLAM Poetry Showcase
  • WHEN?: Friday (TOMORROW), 9/16 @ 8-9pm
  • WHERE?: Outside of Allbritton

Jeanann and Adam both compete at the national level, and most recently represented New York City’s louderARTS Team together at the National Poetry Slam. weSLAM Sees Massive Success at CUPSI

Emily Weitzman ’14 and Randyl Wilkerson ’12 performing “Eyes,” which won Best Persona Poem.

Emily Weitzman ’14, a member of the Wesleyan Slam Poetry Team, writes:

Spending a week in Michigan surrounded only by poets and poetry may have been the furthest from reality I have been in a while. But at the same time, I experienced more emotions in a short period of time than I ever thought possible. One poem would punch you in the face, the next would gently hold your hand, then you would be hiding under your chair in fear, and finally, you were crying from hearing a line that let you feel something you never knew you could. I have never felt more strongly that a poem can change your life.

Between April 6th and April 9th, weSLAM competed against 36 other teams in the College Unions Poetry Slams Invitational, the national spoken word competition at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. weSLAM advanced to the semi-finals and snagged both the Spirit Award and the award for Best Persona Poem, ultimately becoming the 7th-highest-ranked poetry team in the land of the free and the brave. But this is not what’s important here.
