Unofficial Orientation Series 2018: Student Groups

This is a repost of wilk‘s update of michelle‘s update of Maya‘s 2015 post, which was an update of alt‘s 2014 post, which was an update of Q‘s 2013 post, which was an update of Syed‘s 2012 post

This is the annual student activities fair, where you can schmooze or, more likely, be schmoozed to your heart’s content.

This is part of our 2018 Unofficial Orientation Series. A quick reminder that you can check out the welcome post here and past years’ series here.

By the time classes start (aka today, happy first day of classes!), you’ll likely be successfully moved into your dorm, blissfully free from your parents, and finally finding the time to figure your shit out. Soon, you’ll realize that you have a little too much time on your hands — and you might want to fill that time with Organized Social Activities.

Thankfully for you, there are about 300 student groups at Wesleyan, so you have many, many options. Joining student groups is one of the best way to meet people outside of your dorm and in different class years. You could find best friends! Mentors! Something new about yourself! It’s all up to you.

As your Orientation Leaders, advisers, and basically everyone else including me will tell you — stick to the Rule of Seven. Each class you take, group you join, job you have, and any other thing you might do counts as one commitment, and you should try to have only seven full-time commitments per semester. With a standard four-course load, that leaves three spots for you to fill with whatever the hell else you want. That’s what this post is for.

[LIVEBLOG] Student Groups Fair

wesleying: we’re good at lots of things but not really tape

HELLO WESLEYAN. I’m here at table 39 (jointly with Aural Wes) for this year’s Student Groups Fair, sponsored by the Wesleyan Student Assembly! It’s maybe 90 degrees out here in the courtyard outside Beckham. Unfortunately I have no baked goods, but I do have an email list! I promised the staff a bad sign, and I really did make a bad sign — this is an old joke from a couple years ago, and it might be moderately misleading but it is a joke. We don’t sing.

My computer might overheat so I won’t be online the whole time BUT swing by and I’ll tell u about this here blog

Liveblog: Student Activities Fair 2014

Get active! Get involved! Get yourself to the Annual Student Groups Fair, today from 2–5PM outside of Usdan. Wesleying will be liveblogging the event, saying hi to people, and generally doing what we do best. We do not have a booth, and will not actually be taking down any names, but look out in the coming week or so for an announcement about our general interest meeting. Want to know more about Wesleying and what we do? Come look for us somewhere on the grass with a hastily-made sign, typing furiously into a laptop. We’re friendly!

Kickoff the 2014-2015 school year on a high note by attending the 23rd
Annual Student Groups Fair. Student groups are a big part of life at
Wes and the WSA sponsored event is a great opportunity to meet with
both new and established groups. The annual fair also offers you a
chance to network with a few school departments who provide a great
variety of programs every year. Local vendors from the Middletown
community will be in attendance as well to help make the afternoon fun
and entertaining.

Start the year right and come on down with your friends to the Student Groups Fair at the Huss Courtyard between 2 and 5 pm on Friday, September 12.

Date: Friday, September 12th, 2014

Freshmen/transfers, don’t forget the Student Groups Fair on Friday!

Your best chance to sign up for as many student organizations as possible, then ignore most of them until you get fed up and unsubscribe from their mailing lists. And stick to the ones you like, of course.
