Terp Fall ’14: Sunflowers, Suspenders, and Sex Goddesses

“A sunflower is born and dies while Bjork sings lullabies.”—Eriq Robinson ’15

terpmuses

Terpsichore is a student-run and student-choreographed dance show that happens once every semester. There’s a variety of dance genres, from breakdance to weird art concept dance, and a range of dancers from the non-experienced to trained. This semester’s dance features both Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” and a Bjork-soundtracked dance about sunflowers. There are over 100 students participating (probably the reason why Terp sold out a week ago), so you definitely will recognize some of the dancers.

There are two Terp shows tonight, one at 7PM and one at 10PM (the drunk show), and a show at 1PM on Saturday in the World Music Hall. You will probably still get in if you show up early and put your name on the waitlist.

In order to find out a bit more about the choreographers and the choreographing process, I asked this semester’s Terp choreographers about their experience with the show. There are 12 dances in the show, and not all of their choreographers are represented here. Check out the show to see them for yourself!

From Stellar ‘she dances?’ Levy ’15:

Terpsichore is looking for people of all types, sizes, and experience levels to be part of an amazing community of dancers!

Terpsichore is an extremely unique and awesome student choreography showcase that occurs each semester. Any student can choose to choreograph a dance and would present a short phrase at the auditions. Anyone at the audition can try out for any and all pieces! In the past, dances have involved Dracula’s Wedding, Space Jam, ballet, modern, 80s workouts, and some great hip-hop.

If you are interested in being in Terp Core (the dancers who run the show and assist choreographers in their process), the audition will be immediately following the normal auditions.

If you can’t come to auditions and want to participate in Terp this semester, OR you want to choreograph, please contact nrthompson[at]wesleyan[dot]edu or erein[at]wesleyan[dot]edu BY SATURDAY AT 12 NOON.

Because DANCING IS HOT.

Stellar Levy ’15 wants you to pop, lock, and drop it looowwwww:

Terpsichore Auditions!

What show combines football players in Hawaiian print short shorts, Beyonce, body paint, Rihanna, b-boying, tap, jazz, contemporary dance, insane light shows, and zombies sometimes?

One word – Terp.

Terpsichore is a show that happens every semester for any students who want to dance or choreograph, regardless of previous training. These auditions are for the entire Terpsichore show; pieces range from anything from tap and contemporary to ballet and hiphop…and always something fun in between.

ANYONE can choreograph and EVERYONE dances. If you want to choreograph for the show, bring a short excerpt of your dance, or something similar to the dance you will create, and some MUSIC (on an ipod please)!

Resident campus photo menace Mike Nakhla ’13 just sent over this batch of unsurprisingly fantastic shots of Terpsichore’s entirely student-produced show last night. As Terp tradition goes, anyone can choreograph, and everyone who auditioned got to be in at least one piece. Stupidly, I missed it, but according to Sam Melvin ’13, the show featured “the styles included hip hop, break dancing, burlesque (kind of), contemporary, jazz, a fun beach-themed mash-up (huge group number), and a piece to the Natalie Portman Rap.”
