Unofficial Orientation 2018: What to Pack

This is a highly modified repost of Meli’s post from last year, which is a repost of Sam’s post from last year, which is a  repost of Jackson’s post from the year before, which was a repost of Frizzly’s post from the year before, which was a repost of Samira’s post in 2013.

The packing list: possibly the most exciting part of the entire pre-frosh experience. There’s nothing quite like that first pilgrimage to Bed Bath and Beyond, walking through the forest of twin XL sheets and Premium, Ultra High Thread Count, Norwegian-Silk-Worm-Excrement-Infused ® towels. Every which way you look there’s something else that you couldn’t possibly live without in the perfect dorm room you’ve conjured up in your head.

There will be two locations: 58 Fountain Ave (couches, chairs, furniture) [ONLY on Saturday] and 44 Brainerd Ave (mini-fridges, microwaves, lamps, printers, mirrors, bathroom & kitchen items, and more!).

Waste Not Collections

From Michael Ortiz ’16:

Did finals wear you out? Don’t feel like packing? Don’t feel like lugging that humongous fridge home, let alone down the stairs? Well lucky you, you don’t have to! Consider donating your stuff to Waste Not!

For those that are unfamiliar with it, Waste Not is Wesleyan’s annual tag sale that aims to reduce waste on campus by selling used goods. Our sale is traditionally in the fall, during NSO. Our collection is during the spring (WHICH IS NOW). So if you don’t feel like carrying that microwave home or if you realized that you don’t REALLY need that printer anymore, consider giving it to us. We’ll be collecting donations on Saturday, May 16 and on Monday, May 25. There will be collection sites at most dorms and at locations between streets, so as to minimize how far you have to go!

If you have any questions/concerns/want to donate immediately, contact us at wesustainability[at]gmail[dot]com.

It is run and maintained entirely through the commitment of the Wesleyan community, and truly exemplifies the incredible power of reuse. Volunteers will help facilitate donation collection in preparation for the Fall Tag Sale. Volunteers will be required to stay until Wednesday May 27, or risk losing free housing.

Waste Not! Again_2

That’s right. Wesleyan’s annual tag sale just became BIANNUAL. After a great turn out (and due to popular request), Waste Not is coming back for an encore. There are so many leftover donations that we have decided to bring back Waste Not! one more time before the rest of the donations go to Good Will. Our Mission: stock every last dorm, apartment, and house with everything it could possibly desire.

A tag sale of the tag sale: the sale will be on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13th at the Brainerd lot. For $1, fill a box or bag of kitchenware, plates, school supplies, shoes, and MORE. All household appliances will be $5. SOOOOOUPER CHEAP.

So come by 44 Brainerd on Saturday, September 13th from 1-3PM to load up on cheap house furnishings!

Date: Saturday, September 13th
Time: 1 – 3 PM
Place: 44 Brainerd

Waste Not! Tag Sale

From Molly Steinfeld ’15:

Worried that your Grateful Dead poster will be lonely on your dorm room walls? Wanting a love seat for some luvin’? Needing a place to heat up your cup-o-noodle? Then come to Waste Not!, Wesleyan’s annual tag sale, where all of these items and more will be available for purchase.

In the Spring, students donate items as they move out of housing. These items are then stored over the summer and available for purchase by students in the Fall. Proceeds go towards sustaining the program, and the rest goes to charity.

We have refrigerators, microwaves, chairs, couches, lamps, mirrors, and a million odds and ends. Bigger items such as furniture will be at the Fountain location, and miscellaneous items will be at the Brainerd garage. The sale will be on August 30th and 31st. There will be signs around campus to direct you to the TWO locations.

Where to Donate Your Stuff

WasteNot! Locations

If you’re moving out in the next few days and have a bunch of stuff you don’t need or want anymore, donate them to Waste Not! or to Goodwill so they’re not wasted. There’s a group of Waste Not! student volunteers sticking around this week just to collect your cool armchairs, lamps, printers, TVs, didgeridoo, etc.

The official Waste Not! collection will be on Monday, May 26 (from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), but until then you can put your clothing and linens into Goodwill bins around campus. The locations of these bins are marked in green in the map above.

The locations of Monday’s Waste Not! sites are as follows (they’re different from what’s marked above), courtesy of Sustainability Intern Ari Lewenstein ’16 :
