A Conversation With Girltype Behaviors, This Year’s Spring Fling Openers

Girltype Behaviors are Wesleyan’s resident “snack punk” band – purveyors of short, dense DIY punk songs like “Root Vegetable” and “Baby with an iPad.” After loosely playing a few shows together in 2016, the band came together after agreeing to open for Frankie Cosmos in Music House (then at 200 High St) in December 2016.

We first interviewed the band last year, after they released their first EP, Live at WESU 88.1FMThis year, they have a new EP out and are the opening student band for Spring Fling. Wesleying recently sat down with May Klug ’19 (lead vocals & casio), Sallie Fullerton ’18 (guitar), Gemma Shay ’18 (bass), and Shea Fitzpatrick ’18 (vocals and drums) to discuss Spring Fling, touring down the East Coast, forming a band at Wes, and the recent announcement that Grimes and Elon Musk are dating.

BandCampWes: Orkinpod Abandons Argus Comics, Continues Music Career

BJ Lillis ’12 says this is his break-up album. The break-up is between him and Wesleyan.

Fans of the Argus’ tragically defunct comics section (guys, remember “Feet People”?) and surreal Brian Wilson-obsessed psych-pop alike should be thrilled to learn that Orkinpods, the formerly anonymous bedroom pop project of comics editor emeritus B. J. Lillis ’12, has a new album online for the new year. It’s called The Loudest Sound, and it’s also Orkinpod’s finest, most confident work yet, which is definitely saying something, considering I loved 2011’s Boardwalking, Katy Perry cover and all. While Lillis’s previous work channeled the damaged surrealism of Smiley Smile-era Beach Boys, this one reminds me more of Sunflower or Surf’s Up. Gone are the synths and drum samples from the last record; in their place, Lillis employs rich arrangements involving upright piano, violins, ukelele, “harmonicas; audion electric chord organ; pots, pans, glasses; packing-tape drums; jar-of-pennies; laundry basket; maracas and shakers; backgammon pieces; pencils; [and] effects.” The songs are also longer and more fully fledged.

From the first notes of “The Scientists Say,” The Loudest Sound is lush, richly arranged pop music, with some of Lillis’s most gorgeous harmonies and intimate lyrics yet. Listen to it alone and try not to cry. Seriously, listen to the opening track:

My other favorite is probably “What We Bury At Night,” which finds Lillis crooning in a lower register over an almost a cappella backdrop of swirling harmonies, maracas, steel guitar whines, and god knows what else.

Le1f Releases “Liquid” EP, New Video for “Soda”

Le1f (Khalif Diouf ’11) just released a music video for “Soda,” a track off his new EP Liquid. After garnering high praise last spring for his Dark York mixtape and releasing his booty-shaking debut video for “Wut,” Le1f made some music with NYC-based long time collaborator Boody. BNR describes the new EP as “a story of the natural becoming unnatural – of purity assimilating into baseness– a story of the submerged rising up, just to sink again into something new,” whatever that means (it’s moisture-themed).

The “Soda” video was directed by Sam Jones ’10 (who also directed “Wut”) and Ben Bernstein ’10 produced it. Highlights include slow-mos of Le1f’s soda being poured into people’s mouths and the crazy early-aughts outfits including these plastic and denim crop tops:

Listen to previews of the tracks on Liquid after the jump:

BandCampWes: Slightly Elevated, Majorly Awesome

Remember when homegrown rock star Robert Don ’15  released released an EP that he recorded in the Butts? (I do, because I promptly started putting “In Good Time” on all of the mix CDs I made). Don and his band, Since 1902, a motley collection of St. Louis bad-boy musicians, have done it again.

The band is busily working away on a new album called Slightly Elevated, a follow-up to last year’s No Excuses Wednesdays. In the meanwhile, they’ve realized a tantalizing single, “Our Front Yard.” The soulful and syncopated track has been stuck in my head all day:

So have the stunning visuals from their music video

Psi U: Back from the Dead

From Evan Scarlett ’14:

Remember those guys at that place on high street where you had a good, clean, wholesome time during orientation? Well… they’re BAAAAAAAAACK.

This Saturday night Psi U rises from the dead and is back to business as usual.

Siren, Northpaw, The Taste, DeVexo and Igbee are going to be here to play sweet tunes and get wild and so should you.

Feel free to dress halloween themed/zombie themed/no theme. We won’t discriminate.

Oneohtrix Point Never and Ben Seretan ’10 @ Eclectic

Zach submitted an event to be posted? wtf? Zach, please don’t edit this post. It’s already impeccably formatted (thx2u). From Zach Schonfeld ’13:

Oneohtrix Point Never is the stage name of experimental electronic wizard Daniel Lopatin, who’s also known for his work with the duo Ford & Lopatin. Using vintage synthesizers, television samples, and found sounds, OPN crafts distant, weightless tapestries of woozily layered ambient sound. His 2011 masterpiece, Replica, was listed as Pitchfork’s sixth best album of 2011 and described by Consequence of Sound as “like a series of FM radio transmissions from some far-off, twin parallel universe of ours, not peculiar to the point of total alien-ness, but certainly too strange and outlandish to be of Earthly origin.” Listen here.

Ben Seretan ’10 is a Wes alum, guitar genius, songwriter, California native, and member of Duchampion. He described his 2012 release, New Space, as an attempt “to have the sensation of swimming in or being embraced by the sound of my guitar and voice, to feel its physical presence pushing up against my sides, the walls, and furniture.” You can read about his work on Wesleying and listen to it on BandCamp.
