Nearly empty Winter Olin
What is winter break like at Wesleyan? Pretty quiet and peaceful (so far…I’ve only been here for three days). If you’re here for winter session, senior thesis work, winter sports, or just hanging, it’s pretty cool to have the main parts of campus mostly to yourself. There were probably only 10 students in Olin today, which means you have access to basically any chair or outlet you want. It’s also really fucking cold, though there’s not as much snow as in New York or Philly.
If you’re here, Usdan is your best on-campus dining option (Neon Deli is also open, as is Nardelli’s, and basically every other Middletown dining joint. Special shout out to Tschudin Chocolates, whose Chef just won the Food Network show Rewrapped). Usdan’s open with limited service for lunch and dinner until January 19th. If you purchased a meal plan for winter session, you can use your meals. Otherwise, you can use cash, Middletown cash, or credit card. Usdan resumes full dinner service on January 20th, which is also when Weshop opens. Red&Black and Weswings also re-open on January 20th. Full dining hours here:
From Associate Dean of Students Scott Backer:
After a very successful pilot, the Student Affairs leadership series Leadership @ Wes will be running a session during the winter break from January 12th through January 16th.
This five session series will focus on helping students identify their own leadership styles and building skills to apply their knowledge in relevant situations that are applicable in both Wesleyan specific environments and beyond.
The sessions will focus on a particular topic, including equity and inclusion, sexual violence prevention, and alcohol and other drugs.
Each session is two hours and will be followed by lunch that will be provided to all participants.
Space will be limited and statements of intention are due before December 1, 2014. The statement of intention form can be found here.
Deadline for statements of intention: this Monday, December 1
Winter session dates: January 12-16

So you’re back on campus. Maybe you’ve made it back for Wesleyan’s first-ever winter session, maybe you’re trying to write a thesis, or maybe you’re just squatting somewhere and hiding under piles of dirty clothes every time Physical Plant comes into the room. Either way, you’ve probably come to the realization that you have no idea what’s open, no idea what to do with your time, and you’re not really willing to try and answer either of these questions because it’s cold outside.
Here’s a brief run-down of winter at Wesleyan amenities:
FOOD AND DRINK
Options on campus are pretty sparse for food and drink. Most excitingly, Espwesso is open during the day time, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. They’re taking points, Middletown cash, and real cash. They’ve got all the regular drinks, so try and get over to Allbritton when you can.
Everyone’s favorite student-run cafe, Espwesso, will be open for Wesleyan’s very first winter session… DURING THE DAY TIME. That’s right! Beginning on January 8th, Espwesso will be open from 10:00 AM -4:00 PM.
Espwesso is located in the basement of Allbritton, serving premium espresso, tea, coffee and more! We will be accepting cash and Wescard (Middletown Cash and meal points).
So whatever the reason you’re on campus—winter session, writing theses, athletics, jobs—come get warm and caffeinated with a hot drink.
Also, don’t forget Espwesso is looking for a new logo!
Date: January 8th-21st, Monday thru Friday
Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Place: Basement of Allbritton
