Submit to Reverberations Mag

Reverberations Mag is a two-year-old online publication for young people to respond to art in a personal manner. We’re based out of Wes and publish students/young writers from all of the country. We especially encourage members of the greater Middletown community to submit their work.

We publish 3 types of pieces, which you can learn more about in our submission guidelines: Reverberationsmag.com/submit. If you’d like to write for us, we are looking for staff writers. This entails writing for us once per month—which is really quite manageable as our “Fresh Thoughts” are only 200-500 words in length. If you are interested in this position, simply submit one piece in the next 2 weeks and let us know you’d like to be a staff writer. If you don’t have the time to become one of our staff writers, we welcome irregular submissions as well. Respond to the art in your life!

Queer Past, Queer Future

Alumni Jennifer Boylan ’80 and Alexander Chee ’89 read recent work, discuss queer lives and storytelling, and share their own experiences as LGBT writers at Wesleyan.

Jennifer Boylan, a professor at Barnard College, is the author of 15 books, including She’s Not There, the first bestselling work by a transgender American, and I’m Looking Through You, which contains a chapter on Wesleyan. She is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and currently serves as the national co-chair of GLAAD, the media advocacy nonprofit for LGBTQ people. Her new novel, Long Black Veil, is forthcoming in April 2017.

Alexander Chee teaches fiction writing and the essay at Dartmouth College. He is the author of the novels Edinburgh (Welcome Rain, 2001; Picador, 2002) and The Queen of the Night (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016). Edinburgh, which partly takes place at Wesleyan, won the Iowa Writers’ Workshop’s Michener Copernicus Prize in Fiction, the Lambda Literary Foundation’s Editor’s Choice Prize, and the Asian American Writers’ Workshop Literary Award.

Apply to be a Writing Tutor!

If you love to read, write, and — most importantly — help others with their writing, apply to be a writing tutor this fall!

The Writing Workshop has begun soliciting applications for the Fall 2017 writing tutor positions. Apply now—the quick and easy pre-application form is available here (link: http://wesleyan.edu/writing/workshop/becometutor.html ) and is due by Friday, March 10th.

Tutors will be compensated for one semester of work with a $500 stipend and 1/2 course credit in the Writing Certificate. All tutors undergo a two-day intensive training session at the beginning of the fall semester, followed by check-in meetings on Tuesdays from 12-1 PM.

There are two steps in the application process:

1. The pre-application form. This is a short form indicating your interest in applying for a position.

2. The full application is due on Friday, March 10 at 5 pm. Applications are to be delivered to Ford Fellow Gabriel Borelli’s office (Downey House Room 103).

The Wesleyan University Writing Programs is hosting a reading by Jacob Julien visiting writer Pankaj Mishra. Pankaj Mishra is the author of a novel, The Romantics, winner of the Los Angeles Time’s Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, and several works of nonfiction. He is a regular contributor to Bloomberg View, The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, and The New Yorker. In 2014, he was awarded the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize in Nonfiction. His most recent books include From the Ruins of Empire: The Intellectuals Who Remade Asia and Age of Anger: A History of The Present.

If you have some visual art skills and some serious storytelling impulses, come by the Shapiro Center to learn more about Amy Bloom’s Creating Children’s Books class, taught in spring 2017! Amy and a previous student will answer questions about the class and application process, and snacks will be provided!

Whether you are looking to create a book that will launch your career (or at least get you an interview), create a series that changes the world of children’s books or write a book that you’ll cherish forever, learn more about a chance to craft a book of your very own.
