Project No Red Zone

“The main goal of Project No Red Zone is to highlight and make-known to all students the resources available to survivors of sexual violence on campus.”

During lunch in Usdan for the past few weeks, folks from the WSA and others have been tabling about Project No Red Zone, an initiative that began last year as an effort to raise awareness about campus sexual assault and resources on campus to support survivors. The project also aims to help promote a culture of consent on campus.

In the Facebook event for Project No Red Zone, organizers of the event posted 8 action items that anyone on campus can do to help promote a culture of consent:

WSA, Administration, and Students Respond to White Supremacist Posters

Earlier today, I received a tip from a friend that yesterday (April 23), a group of older white “protesters” were demonstrating in the 100 block of Washington Street (between High Street and Main) around 2-3PM, and were displaying signs with messages like “White America is the real America.” After I updated today’s post with that information, Wesleying received several anonymous tips confirming that there was indeed a white nationalist demonstration on Washington Street yesterday afternoon.

Those submitting the tips said that they overheard the group of white nationalist demonstrators planning an “anti affirmative action” demonstration outside of the Office of Admission at 9PM tonight. But that’s not exactly how it panned out.

420 Eco Stage Show featuring 3D Printed Vegan Snax

From Phoebe Bodkin ’17:

Scott Beibin’s eco stage show– a bicycle-powered show — is a cross between Bill Nye and Whose Line is it Anyway. It features a home-built 3D printer that prints vegan snacks for the audience. His hope is to expose students to the vanguard of independent science research communities and to encryption and cyber security. The show features wearable technologies, like a gauntlet with screen/keyboard that controls the projections. Perfect for your 420 celebrations!

“Keep Bleeding, Love”: WSA’s Initiative for Low-Cost Menstrual Products

WSA+Banner-Recovered

In an effort to make menstruation products more accessible on campus, the WSA announced on February 10th, that in partnership with Davison Health Centerlow-cost pads and tampons will be available at the Health Center.

Here are some details from the email:

The Health Center has purchased bulk supplies of Naturelle regular absorbency tampons and Maxithins individually wrapped sanitary pads. Supplies will be available 6 days a week when the Health Center is open. The cost is $2.00 for 15 tampons and $2.00 for 10 maxi-pads, and students can pay by cash or charge to their student account.”

After Students Organize, Wesleyan Hires New CAPS Staff

“In addition to reduced wait times for initial appointments, as well as more regular ongoing appointments, we expect the increase in staffing will improve comprehensive services for sexual violence prevention and treatment and allow the team to continue building stronger relationships with marginalized students and student groups through outreach activities.” – Dean Whaley

wesneedscaps

Yesterday afternoon, Dean Mike Whaley sent out an all-campus email informing the student body that an additional full-time psychotherapist will be joining CAPS in the fall of 2017. This comes after the announcement of the hiring of a full-time APRN after more than a semester without a prescriber (part-time or full-time) on campus.

According to Whaley’s email, the new hires “will improve comprehensive services for sexual violence prevention and treatment and allow the team to continue building stronger relationships with marginalized students.”

The email, however, leaves out any discussion of the student-organized campaign and WSA resolution from last semester that originally proposed expansions in CAPS. Read past the jump for the full text of Dean Whaley’s email and more context on the student efforts that made this new staff position a reality.

Cultivating a Culture of Consent: Project No Red Zone

“Consent. All the cool kids are doing it.”

pnrz-3

This past weekend marked the halfway point of the “Red Zone”, or the first six weeks of school when students are statistically most vulnerable to sexual assault and violence.

I sat down with WSA President Rebecca Hutman ’17 and Vice President Nila Ravi ’17 (with a brief interjection by Lizzie Shackney ’17, who was also chilling in Pi) to find out more about the project and its trajectory for the rest of the six weeks and beyond.

Wesleyingiversary: Syed Says Hello

“Retirement is hard. I still have random ideas from time to time for both serious and weird Wesleying posts. The only comfort I have is that I might walk down a NYC street and Zach might call me saying, “Hey, are you in Union Square?” because he’s creepily watching you from the coffee shop on the corner. It’s like people always say, Wesleyings Never Die.”

This is part of our series of Wesleyingiversary interviews. You can find the rest here.

I said what’s up to Syed in a Facebook messenger conversation a week or so ago and we talked about the WSA, Espwesso Pweview Night, and possibly introducing a Wesleying paywall. Now, please kowtow to his blogging greatness:

Unofficial Orientation Series 2016: Rage Update

isthiswhy1

Students march to South College as part of ISTHISWHY Campaign

Content warning: This article discusses issues of sexual assault. Community and official support resources can be accessed here, here, and here.

This is part of our 2016 Unofficial Orientation Series. A quick reminder that you can check out the welcome post here and past years’ series here.

For some reason, this post was not included in last year’s Unofficial Orientation Series, even though we had some major student activism occurring during the 2014-2015 school year. Before I link to some of that history and go more in-depth as to some actions occurring this past year, I want to start by quoting alt‘s incredibly well-written intro to the 2014 Rage Update:

What in the Name of MGMT Is This Latest Bullshit With the WSA and the Argus?

Our alternative title was going to be “0P3N L3TT3R$: An Open Letter to All the Open Letters About Other Open Letters”

12919066_10208415708205685_1985027041_n

Back in September when the original Argus/WSA conflict exploded across campus (and in, like, all 50 states), the editors of Wesleying decided not to comment on the situation, mostly due to that fact that A) we were half-dead at the time (but we have arisen!!!!!!), and B) we weren’t really interested in taking a “side” as an ~institution~.

But then there was a development in the latest installment of Gossip Girl: Argus v. WSA: Open letters. Open letters about open letters. Open letters about open letters about open letters. In the words of hermes’ late Grandma Evelyn (may she rest in eternal peace), oy gevalt.

It appears that the Wesleyan Argus and the Wesleyan Student Assembly are in yet another kerfuffle over a steaming pile of fuckery, so Mama Wesleying is here to decipher it all.

Here it is, folks: The latest Argus/WSA conflict, ~*~EXPLAINED~*~.

Martinez ’17 Discusses Giving Stipends to Student Group Leaders on Financial Aid

Screen Shot 2016-01-29 at 10.12.17 AM

Combating classism has been a major topic on campus for quite some time now, and the WSA is looking to do something about it.

Below is a “press release”/statement from Aidan Martinez ’17, Vice President of the WSA, talking about a new resolution that hopes to provide stipends to students on financial aid who participate heavily in a particular student group. If you want to discuss the program with the Assembly, they’ll be meeting this Sunday, January 31st, at 6:30pm to 41 Wyllys Room 114.

And as always, if you have affirming/dissenting/random thoughts and opinions on this issue and wish to have them put on Wesleying, feel free to email us at staff(at)wesleying(dot)org.

Aidan’s statement is after the jump.
