Call for Davison Art Center Student Docents

R. Luke DuBois "A More Perfect Union" 2011

R. Luke DuBois “A More Perfect Union” 2011

From our friends at the Davison Art Center:

Introduce 4th-grade students to the world of the arts!
The Friends of the Davison Art Center (FDAC) are looking for volunteer docents or tour guides for their school tours program this Fall. Docents introduce over 400 Middletown fourth graders to art, music, and architecture through annual tours of Wesleyan arts, including the Zilkha GalleryMansfield Freeman Gallery, and Gamelan orchestra.  Docents will lead tours, assist in creating lesson plans, meet with curators, and stimulate connections and a dialogue about the works of art. Tours run the dates of October 6-8, 13-15, and 21-22 from 9:15am-12:30pm. All docents will be required to attend the training session and commit to one (or more!) shifts. The FDAC has a history of over 40 years of engaging with Middletown’s students and we couldn’t do it without the tremendous support of our volunteers.

Opening Reception “Picture/Thing”

From Andrew Chatfield:

“Picture/Thing” presents ten artists—Kendall Baker, Isidro Blasco, Rachel Harrison ‘89,Leslie Hewitt, Jon Kessler, Anouk Kruithof, Marlo Pascual, Mariah Robertson, Erin Shirreff, and Letha Wilson—who make hybrid objects that challenge the limits of photography and sculpture at a time when the definitions of the two media continue to evolve. These artists take varying approaches to material, technology, and presentation, expanding and redrawing the traditional perimeters of both. Defying photography’s specificity as a “window onto the world,” some prioritize the materiality of the photograph over the actual image, while others migrate the graphic flatness of the photograph into the full dimensionality of the sculptural realm. Undoubtedly a response to the immateriality and infinite reproducibility of digital technology, the surveyed works insist on both the physical presence and uniqueness associated with sculpture, and the indexical relationship to the physical world exemplified by photography, resulting in a new formulation: a picture/thing.

Opening reception: Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 5pm to 6:30pm with talk by the curators at 5:30pm

Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, Noon to 5 pm from January 29 to March 1

Art and Open Source: A Panel Discussion (Moderated by Wesleying)

panel1-and-2-640px

In conjunction with Evan Roth’s exhibit, Intellectual Property Donor, in the Zilkha Gallery, I (BZOD) will be moderating a panel on art and open source tomorrow afternoon. The description for the event is as follows:

Once the nearly exclusive purview of lawyers and librarians, questions of copyrights, freedom of information, and open source programming now reach into the lives of everyone. From the knock-off Prada bag, to the distribution of music, to question of privacy that could impact national security–all of these issues and more come to the fore with currently available technologies. Previously accepted precepts and practices are being challenged from all sides. Moderated by students from the blog Wesleying.org [ME!], this panel of Wesleyan faculty and students will explore these engaging issues with audience participation invited.

The panel will include Assistant Professor of Sociology Greg GoldbergDean of Social Studies Joyce JacobsenMax Dietz ’16Isabella Litke ’12, and Music Librarian Alec McLane. Each panelist will speak for five minutes on an open source issue related to their interests, and then I will ask questions to the panel or take questions from the audience. Come! It’ll be fun.

Date: Tuesday, February 11
Time: 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Place: Zilkha 106 (turn right when you enter the lobby of Zilkha Gallery)
